Coe squashes Cornell with 729 yards

The 21st Century has been really, really good for the Coe College football team in its ancient rivalry with Cornell.

On second that, make that tremendous.

The Kohawks amassed an eye-popping 729 yards of total offense Saturday and squashed the Rams, 50-3, for their 16th straight victory in the series that began way back in 1891.

The 729 yards are the second-most for Coe in school history, trailing a 771-yard performance against Grinnell in 1993.

This was the 125th renewal of the series and the Kohawks have prevailed every time since the 21st Century began in the year 2000, extending their lead in the series to 71-50-4.

No. 7 Cougars roll by North Scott

The Cardiac Cougars gave their hearts and nerves a rest Friday night.

Nick Duehr passed for four touchdowns and No. 7 Kennedy held North Scott to 145 yards of total offense in a 42-0 cakewalk in a Class 4A non-district game at Kingston Stadium.

Shaun Beyer caught three TD passes from Duehr, Tyler Dralle rushed for 149 yards and the Cougars collected four turnovers, including three by handyman Austin Coates.

Kennedy (3-0) posted a pair of heart-stomping victories in the first two weeks of the season against Iowa City West (34-31) and Washington (28-24), but the Cougars had a chance to relax against North Scott (0-3) on homecoming.

"I'm very happy with the way we came out and played on both sides of the ball," coach Brian White said. "It was a total game for us tonight.

"They just played well, all over the place. Nick Duehr played well, Beyer played well, obviously our offensive line played well, Tyler Dralle had tough yards tonight. And our defense -- wow."

Warriors punish IC West, 42-13

IOWA CITY – One mark of a good football team is the ability to bounce back from adversity.

The Washington Warriors did that in impressive fashion Friday at the expense of Iowa City West.

Washington overcame a sloppy, penalty-marred opening drive to pound West, 42-13, on the road.

The victory came a week after Washington’s 28-24 loss to Kennedy.

“They just really motivated us,” Washington senior Isaiah Nimmers said of the Kennedy players. “They set us back. They really did.

“So everybody was hungry this week. There was no messing around. So that was probably the worst thing (Kennedy) could’ve done.”

Phillips, Gorsich star as Lions roll

About the only thing that could slow down Linn-Mar junior quarterback Reese Phillips on Friday night was a bum ankle.

His arm was working beautifully.

Phillips set a Linn-Mar record with five touchdown passes in less than three quarters of action as the Lions shot out to a 34-0 lead and cruised to a 50-14 win over Clinton at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The five scoring tosses broke the single-game record of four, shared by four other former Lions, most recently last season by Ryan Schmidt, who did it twice, in wins over Waterloo West and Jefferson.

Schmidt, now playing at Iowa, was in attendance and was in the locker room to congratulate Phillips.

"It just felt great out there tonight," Phillips said. "After we hit them with a deep one, they just sagged off and we took advantage."

The guy taking advantage was senior Daniel Gorsich, who caught four of Phillips' scoring passes, which tied a Lion record for touchdown receptions in a game. Ironically, Gorsich was on the field last year when Trevor Noble caught four TD passes against Jefferson.

"I'm glad to have tied (the record)," Gorsich said. "I didn't really care about the touchdowns. I was more concerned about getting the win, and we got it."

Phillips said he knew pretty quickly that the Clinton defenders couldn't stay with Gorsich.

"Danny is just so versatile," Phillips said. "They really couldn't guard him. He was too fast for them."

No. 7 Saints rally by No. 8 Solon

SOLON - Bryce Schulte threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Nick Stark in the final minutes of the game Friday night as No. 7 Xavier nipped No. 8 Solon, 22-19, in a Class 3A district game at Spartan Stadium.

Solon led 19-7 in the fourth quarter, but the Saints got within 19-14 on a 12-yard touchdown run by Maliki Wilson and the PAT with 9:47 left to play, capping an 85-yard drive.

The Saints got the ball at their own 7-yard line with 3:13 left in the ballgame and promptly drove 93 yards for the winning touchdown. They used a trick play to gain 35 valuable yards when Schulte threw a lateral to Nolan Butkowski, who passed to Blake Whitten for the big gain.

Xavier (2-0) added a two-point conversion after the 58-yard TD pass from Schulte to Stark for a 22-19 lead. Solon drove into Xavier territory, but Caleb Billick intercepted a pass and the Saints ran out the clock.
