J-Hawks, Nearad honored by Register

Cedar Rapids Jefferson graduates Maddie Hansen and Hannah Towns have been named to the Class 5A all-state softball teams by the Des Moines Register.

Hansen, a catcher, and Towns, an outfielder were named second team all-state in Class 5A.

Taylor Nearad of Solon, who is now a freshman outfielder at Kirkwood, has been named to the Elite All-State Team by the Register. Nearad led the state with 75 RBIs and helped Solon win the Class 3A state title.

 

Kernels make 3 roster moves

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announced Friday that outfielder Max Murphy has been activated from the 7-day disabled list, outfielder Chris Paul has been placed on the 7-day DL with a right shoulder impingement and infielder Blake Schmit has been activated from the 7-day DL and promoted to Fort Myers.

Murphy went on the DL July 19 with a left oblique strain. He has played in 77 games this season, batting .227 with four home runs and 30 RBIs.

Schmit went on the DL June 11 with a left facial fracture after being hit by a pitch against Great Lakes June 10. He played in 18 games for the Kernels and was batting .226 with a home run and 12 RBIs.

Paul joined the Kernels Aug. 9 from Elizabethton and is batting .167.

 

Metro Players in Pro Baseball

The Metro Sports Report provides regular updates on all the Metro graduates in pro baseball. Here is the report through Thursday, Aug. 20.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Oklahoma City, OF, Triple-A, Pacific Coast League (Dodgers): Schebler went 1-for-5 with a double and run scored Thursday in a 9-3 loss to Reno as the leadoff hitter. He is batting .244 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Fort Myers, OF, High-A, Florida State League (Twins): Christensen did not play Thursday in a 1-0 victory over Bradenton. He is batting .249 with two homers and 33 RBIs.

JON KELLER (CR Xavier), Bowie, P, Double-A, Eastern League (Orioles): Jon Keller did not pitch Thursday in a 7-3 victory over Trenton. He has a 0-0 record and 0.00 ERA in three innings in Double-A.

MITCH KELLER (CR Xavier), Bristol, P, Rookie, Appalachian League (Pirates): Mitch Keller did not pitch Thursday in a 5-1 loss. He has an 0-1 record and 2.79 ERA.

   

Lindwall strikes again for Warriors

SILVIS, Ill. - Two days, two demanding courses, two outstanding rounds of golf.

That's been the story this week for Cedar Rapids Washington junior Frank Lindwall, who fired a 3-under-par 68 Tuesday and claimed medalist honors at the Washington Warrior Invitational at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Lindwall nipped Tripp Kinney of Waukee by one shot Tuesday, just a day after the two premier golfers shared medalist honors with 3-under 69's in the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge.

Waukee won the team championship Tuesday at 294. Dowling took second place, followed by Linn-Mar, Washington and Xavier.

Max Thrune and Brent Larson of Linn-Mar tied for eighth at 5-over 76.

Thomas commits to Crookston volleyball

Marion High School senior Alyssa Thomas has decided to continue her volleyball career at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, which is an NCAA Division II school.

Thomas, a 5-foot-10 hitter, helped Marion compile a 34-8 record last season and reach the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament. She led the Indians with 367 kills and contributed 53 blocks.

Thomas was named first team all-state in Class 4A.
