Huskies blank West Delaware

Joey Philipp scored two goals and Tom Scroggs had a goal and an assist as Cedar Valley Christian blanked West Delaware, 3-0, in boys soccer action Thursday night at the Tuma Sports Complex.

Colin Heeren gained the shutout in goal for the Huskies, who scored all their goals in the first half.

 

 

Cuhel won silver medal at 1928 Olympics

Among the most decorated male track and field athletes in Metro history, there was an Olympic medalist. And few today know of him.

Frank Cuhel was a silver medalist in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam in the 400 meter hurdles. Great Britain’s David Burghley ran 53.4 to Cuhel’s 53.6

Cuhel competed for old Washington High School of Cedar Rapids, where he won five individual state championships on three state title teams for Coach Leo Novak.

(The original Washington High School opened in 1857 and was located at Fourth Avenue SE and Greene Square Park. It was razed in 1946. The present Washington High School opened in 1957. Artist Marvin Cone and radio pioneer Arthur Collins are among the original Washington school alumni).

Kennedy boys net 22 in rout of East

Ten different players scored, and four finishing with hat tricks, as Kennedy blasted Waterloo East, 22-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer match Thursday at Kennedy.

Goals were scored by: Sameeullah Jung (3), Yusef Igram (3), Dylan Anderson (3), Connor Peterson (3), Andrew Sheeley (2), Skylar Showalter (2), Freddie Borbor (2), Jacob Sarasin (2), Amadou Kujabi and Alex Stone.

Assists were by: Borbor (5), Sam Hanzelka (4), Stone (4), Finn Duffy (4), Igram (3), Showalter (3), Kujabi (3), Sheeley (2), Jung (2), Michael Leventhal (2), Luis Granadillo, Anderson and Sarasin.

Kennedy is now 8-8 overall and 6-7 in the MVC.

 

   

Xavier girls blank Waterloo West

WATERLOO - Ingrid Husby had two goals and two assists and Katie Ives also scored a goal as Xavier blanked Waterloo West, 10-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer match on Thursday night.

Morgan Brown, Grace McDermott, Payton Sadilek, Sydney Wright, Elena Minor and Lizzy Bailey each scored once for the Saints.

Morgan Brown, Hannah Chicchelly, Brylee Bastain, Paige Diebold and Ellie Fischer all had assists.

 

 

Jenks eyes Metro record for state titles

Linn-Mar’s Stephanie Jenks certainly has placed her face on the Mount Rushmore of Metro girls track. This weekend, she will attempt to make history.

And with a year left in her high school career.

Jenks will compete this week in the 800, 1500, 3000 and 400 hurdles at the girls’ state track meet. She already holds the all-time Metro marks in all three distance events and the all-time state best in the 3000.

Jenks has won five individual state championships in her career, tying her with Jefferson’s Robin Threatt.

Jenks’ target is LaNeisha Waller of Washington, who has the most individual championships in Metro history with seven. She captured three wins in the long jump, three in the 100 meters and one in the 100 hurdles from 2001 to 2004.
