Good-Jones wins Metro Spotlight Award

Julian Good-Jones of Cedar Rapids Washington has been named the Metro Spotlight winner for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Good-Jones, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman, is one of the top football players in the state and a key member of the Washington team that has won 12 straight games this season.

The top-ranked Warriors will face second-ranked Bettendorf in the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs on Friday at 4:06 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.

Good-Jones has committed to the Iowa State Cyclones as an offensive lineman, but he's been a two-way player for Washington this season on both sides of the ball. He's a member of a powerful offensive line that has helped the Warriors run for 3,420 yards, which is the second-best total in Class 4A in the state.

KGYM replaces Patrick with Van Pelt

Dan Patrick is out, Scott Van Pelt is in.

That's the news from Cedar Rapids radio station KGYM, the local ESPN affiliate that had broadcast the Dan Patrick Show on a tape-delayed basis from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Patrick's final nationally syndicated talk show on KGYM aired Friday. The Van Pelt show will take its place Monday in the same time slot and will be broadcast live.

Patrick's company notified KGYM management last Monday that it did not plan to renew its contract with KGYM. Under terms of the contract, Patrick had to give KGYM a 90-day notice that the contract would not be renewed, which means KGYM could have kept broadcasting the Patrick show for another three months.

However, KGYM management decided to make a clean break of it now instead of waiting until early February. "They are making a business decision, as are we," said Julie Hein, the general manager at KGYM.

Drake claims 2 gold medals at state swim

MARSHALLTOWN - Linn-Mar sophomore Kelsey Drake came home from the state swimming meet Saturday with two gold medals and one slightly embarrassing confession.

The embarrassing moment came a few minutes after Drake captured the 200 individual medley by a scant 5-hundredths of a second in an exhausting race.

She left the pool deck and spilled her guts, to put it as delicately as possible.

"I was dehydrated after my 200 IM," Drake explained. "I didn't feel good. I had a headache and I kind of threw up a little bit. It was stressful."

Fortunately, Drake managed to leave the pool deck before the unfortunate episode.

"It wasn't in the pool," she said with a relieved smile. "Thank God."

Gernhofer is quick help for Riders

Tyler Gernhofer did not take long to make his mark in Cedar Rapids.

Acquired on Thursday from Bloomington for Jason Kalinoski, Gernhofer has not even practiced with the RoughRiders yet but he already has a game-winning goal.

Gernhofer's one-timer from the right circle at 16:12 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie, giving Cedar Rapids a 3-2 win Saturday night over Fargo before 2,684 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The victory pushed the RoughRiders to 11-1-0 for 22 points, which is good for first place in the USHL's Eastern Division.

"We've watched Tyler for years and we have always liked him," said Riders Coach Mark Carlson of the decision to acquire the 5-foot-9, 230-pound Gernhofer. "We think he makes us a deeper hockey team and he's only going to get better."

Kohawks capture title, earn NCAA bid

The Coe volleyball team won the Iowa Conference tournament Saturday night and half the squad took off for the locker room and their normal post-game meeting.

Not so fast, ladies.

The Kohawks had to be summoned back to the gym at Eby Fieldhouse to collect their tournament awards, pose for pictures and hug everyone in sight.

You'll have to forgive the Kohawks for not knowing how to act after sweeping Buena Vista, because this is the first time Coe has ever won the conference tournament.

"No one was telling us what to do," laughed senior Rachel Schaefer, the all-time kills leader at Coe. "I thought we'd go and talk first and then come up and get our hugs."

The Kohawks (28-8) earned the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III regional tournament that begins next week. This will be Coe's second trip to the NCAA tourney in school history.
