Woodin went from stocks to blocks

DeAnn Woodin is following her passion for being a leader in her ninth year as Coe’s volleyball coach, but she wasn’t always on the coaching path.

Woodin attended the University of South Dakota and transferred to the University of Northern Iowa for a double major in Finance and Economics. She was a stockbroker for a few years while being a volunteer coach at UNI and then an assistant at Wartburg.

Throughout this process Woodin realized that coaching was her passion. She coached at Kirkwood and went to the University of Iowa as the Director of Volleyball Operations before coming to Coe.

Woodin’s best influences in life were her coaches and teachers, so making the switch from stock broker to coaching was only logical.

“I love helping people and working with young people and coaching is essentially teaching,” she explained. “If you do something you love every day you don’t feel like it’s a job.”

No. 1 Warriors break record, 78-13

The first round of the 2014 Class 4A playoffs proved to be a record-setter for the top-ranked Washington Warriors.

Coach Paul James' team led 64-0 at halftime in Wednesday night's game at Kingston Stadium and scored a school-record 78 points in a 78-13 thrashing of the Clinton River Kings.

Washington (10-0) will host Cedar Falls in the second round Monday night.

Clinton closes its season at 2-8.

Eight different Warriors scored touchdowns. Connor Vincent score three times and Nick Nassif added a pair.

No. 6 Lions shrug off Davenport Central

It wasn't exactly a playoff atmosphere Wednesday night at Linn-Mar Stadium as the Lions played host to Davenport Central in a Class 4A first-round contest.

That had Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth concerned.

"It's just a different environment when you come out here for that first Wednesday night playoff game," he said. "The band's not here. The crowd's not where you want, but I thought our kids did a good job of working around that."

The Lions shrugged things off and defeated Davenport Central, 34-14.

Linn-Mar took control with a 24-point second quarter, relying again on big plays from quarterback Ryan Schmidt and Trevor Noble to get in scoring position. Neither of the dynamic seniors were able to get into the end zone, but a couple big runs from Schmidt and three more long passes to Noble set the table for others.

Pleasant Valley tops Prairie in OT

BETTENDORF - Mike Morrissey nearly had a happy homecoming Wednesday night, but his Prairie Hawks fell just short in an agonizing defeat.

Pleasant Valley tripped Prairie, 31-24, in overtime in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs at Pleasant Valley.

Pleasant Valley scored a touchdown with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter and kicked the PAT to forge a 24-24 tie and force overtime.

The Spartans had the ball first in overtime and scored on a 5-yard run by Chase Kipper and Austin Adamson added the extra point. Prairie was not able to respond with a touchdown and went home with a tough defeat.

JoJo Simpson rushed for 203 yards for Prairie and scored two touchdowns, including an 89-yard jaunt to begin the scoring. Prairie took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown by Keagan Pinter and Sam Drysdale's PAT, but Pleasant Valley rallied in the second half.

Brendon Bormann scored on a 20-yard run and Tyler Flanders tallied on a 27-yard run as Pleasant Valley grabbed a 17-14 advantage. Drysdale tied the game, 17-17, with a 44-yard field goal for Prairie.
