Emily Oler wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington freshman Emily Oler is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Oler helped the Washington softball team enjoy a winning season this year with her hitting and pitching as just a ninth grader.

Oler finished third in the Metro area in the power departments with eight home runs and 47 RBIs, trailing only Erin Drahozal of Xavier and Gabi Carter of Prairie. She also hit .379 for the Warriors.

Oler helped Washington in the pitching circle with a 9-9 record and 2.16 ERA, making her a dual threat with her bat and arm. She was named second team all-Metro and second team all-Mississippi Valley Conference.

Washington finished 22-17 overall and 13-13 in the MVC.

Gonsalves makes strong debut for Kernels

DAYTON, Ohio - Stephen Gonsalves tossed six innings of shutout ball Sunday afternoon to help the Cedar Rapids Kernels trip Dayton, 4-1, before 8,139 fans in a Midwest League game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton.

Gonsalves struck out six batters in six innings. He allowed three hits and walked only one batter.

Gonsalves, 20, joined the Kernels last week from Elizabethton in the Appalachian League. The Minnesota Twins picked him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft from Cathedral High School in San Diego and gave him a $700,000 signing bonus.

Brandon Bixler allowed one run in two innings for the Kernels. Dallas Gallant pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for the save.

Good-Jones feels good about Cyclones

Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads offered Julian Good-Jones a scholarship on March 8, but the big offensive lineman from Cedar Rapids Washington did not want to rush into things before making a final decision.

Good-Jones also received offers from Kansas State and Oregon State, so he delayed making his choice until he could carefully analyze all three schools.

"I just wanted to see the other schools that were interested in me," he said Saturday afternoon. "I got a chance to visit all the schools that were going to offer before my senior season. That's when I wanted to get it done by."

Good-Jones, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle, ended the suspense Friday while touring the ISU facilities in Ames. He wanted a chance to tell Rhoads in person that he's accepted the offer and is excited about becoming a Cyclone.

Metro softball hits 16-year drought

This was a good year for girls softball in the Metro area.

Xavier and Jefferson won division titles in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Six of the seven Metro teams (all but Marion) had winning records.

Kennedy, Linn-Mar and Washington all showed significant improvement from 2013, turning losing records into winning marks under new head coaches.

Kennedy jumped from 13-25 to 27-14. Linn-Mar improved from 16-22 to 27-14. Washington went from 14-25 to 22-16.

Clearly, all three of those teams are headed in the right direction.
