Hu, Wade give Kernels 'international' win

Chih-Wei Hu and Logan Wade live on the other side of the world when they are not playing professional baseball in the United States, but they formed a winning combination in Cedar Rapids Thursday night for the Kernels.

Hu, from Taiwan, pitched six strong innings in his first outing for the Kernels. And Wade, from Australia, made sure it had a happy ending in his first game back from a lengthy stay on the disabled list.

The result was a 7-5 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before 2,700 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Wade belted a three-run homer in the eighth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit and give the Kernels a 5-4 lead, then Alex Swim gave Cedar Rapids a 7-4 cushion with a two-run double after Wisconsin relief pitcher Tyler Alexander hit two batters.

Warriors sweep Hawks, reach .500 in MVC

The seniors on the Cedar Rapids Washington baseball team have played for four different head coaches during their careers, but nobody was complaining Wednesday night after the Warriors swept Prairie to reach the .500 mark in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Washington performed the twin-killing, 4-3 and 6-2, with strong pitching from Jared Thorson and Isaiah Nimmers and timely hitting.

Byron Schlotterback, Brent Henry, Tony Lombardi and Scott Brune have served as Washington's head coach while the seniors have been in school and the Warriors have not had a winning season under any of them since 2009.

This team has a chance, though.

Washington raised its records to 12-14 overall and 11-11 in the Mississippi Valley Conference by sweeping Prairie at the Washington field.

Mauer not happy as Kernels fall, 5-2

Cedar Rapids Kernels starting pitcher Ryan Eades struck out nine hitters in his five innings on the mound Wednesday night and the bullpen added four more whiffs.

Normally, that should be enough pitching to get a win, but a lack of timely hitting and some faulty defense by the home team allowed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to top the Kernels, 5-2, in front of 1,597 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Kernels Manager Jake Mauer was succinct in his post-game analysis.

“We didn’t catch the ball,” Mauer said. “We don’t catch the ball, we’re not gonna win.

“The third baseman kicks two. Ball dribbles past our first baseman, doesn’t even move for it. Center fielder dives for a ball he’s got no chance at. Very disappointing.”

It has been a familiar pattern for the Kernels through much of the season.

Timmons retires as Coe softball coach

Bob Timmons has retired as the softball coach at Coe College, the school announced Wednesday.

Diane Meyer, a long-time assistant coach with the Kohawks and a former player at Coe, will succeed Timmons as head coach.

Timmons retires as one of the most successful coaches in the history of NCAA Division III softball. With a career record of 927-366, he leaves with the second-most wins in NCAA Division III history and is one of just three coaches in the division with more than 900 career wins.

His 552 wins in 17 seasons at Coe are the most in school history.

“It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I felt it was the right time," said Timmons. "I look forward to spending a lot of time with my friends and family and doing a little bit more hunting, fishing, golfing and anything else that just sounds like fun."

Larson's bat sends J-Hawks past Kennedy

Jefferson’s Lucas Larson and Kennedy’s Zach Daniels played for years on the same youth league baseball team from the time they were little kids.

But until Tuesday night, the J-Hawk junior had never batted against the Cougars' ace pitcher.

And he wasn’t very nice to his childhood pal.

Larson’s doubles in the first and fifth innings served as a warm-up for his dramatic last at bat:

Score tied 5-5 with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one strike against him, Larson is looking for another fast ball, but instead Daniels dishes up a change-up.
