Wade hurt as Kernels fall to QC

DAVENPORT - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost a ballgame and lost another ballplayer Wednesday night.

Second baseman Logan Wade dislocated his left shoulder when he dove for a ground-ball single in the second inning. He landed awkwardly and left the game in pain.

The Kernels lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 7-3, in a Midwest League game before 1,182 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

"It's dislocated," Kernels Manager Jake Mauer said after the game. "No broken bones, but they couldn't pop it back in. They had to put him under.

"He's still at the hospital. They'll put it in a sling and he'll see our doctor tomorrow."

Assuming Wade is placed on the Disabled List, he'll become the sixth Kernel on the DL after just 32 games of the season. Pitcher Randy Rosario, catcher Michael Quesada, second baseman Tanner Vavra, outfielder Zack Granite and outfielder Jeremias Pineda are currently on the Disabled List.

KCC women sign 6-foot-5 center

The Kirkwood women's basketball team will have one of the tallest players in school history on the roster next season when 6-foot-5 center Kaycee Kallenberger joins the squad.

Kallenberger spent this past season at Eastern Illinois University, where she played sparingly and scored seven points in 11 games.

Kallenberger was an all-conference player in the Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) in high school. She set the career record for blocked shots at North Scott, then transferred to Pleasant Valley for her senior year.

Kirkwood has signed seven new players for the 2014-15 campaign, Coach Kim Muhl announced Wednesday.

The other new players are Cyerra Hutchins of Cedar Rapids Prairie, Casey Miles from Hudson High School, Addie Obermann from Northeast Goose Lake, Madison Wood from Cedar Falls, A.J. Downs from Merillville (Ind.) and Caitlin Sudduth from Tinley Park (Ill.).

Gorman set for Navy; Prairie wins title

Shannon Gorman has grown accustomed to getting up early and going for long jaunts as one of the top distance runners in Iowa, but those early-morning excursions will take a new twist when she reports for duty at the U.S. Naval Academy June 30.

When she gets to Annapolis, those early-morning runs will begin shortly after 4 a.m. and there could be somebody yelling at her at the equivalent of Navy's boot camp.

Gorman narrowed her college choices to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy before going Navy.

"I'm definitely excited for it," she said Tuesday. "I'm scared about getting yelled at and waking up at 4 in the morning every day, but I think it's necessary (for training purposes).

"I'm confident that I can get through it, but I know it will be really tough."
