Big man looms large for Kirkwood

Henry Uwadiae is a typical junior college player in many ways.

His goal for this season is to polish his skills on the way to a career at a four-year college.

What makes the Kirkwood Community College red-shirt freshman unique is something that can’t be taught.

“You know he is really unique because of his size,” said first-year Eagles’ Coach Bryan Petersen. “His athleticism (at 6-foot-11) is very unique for our league and junior college basketball in general.  That’s what he brings to the table for us.”

KCC women struggle against Mustangs

The Kirkwood women's basketball team has the talent to enjoy another successful season this year, but the young Eagles have plenty of room for growth.

That was apparent Wednesday night when Kirkwood lost a scrimmage to Mount Mercy University, 50-45, at Johnson Hall.

The Eagles led, 28-26, at halftime, but they scored only 17 points in the second half.

RoughRiders lead USHL in scoring

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders have been a scoring machine in the United States Hockey League this season.

The RoughRiders lead the USHL in scoring at 5.6 goals per game, a healthy pace through five contests, and the scoring has been well-distributed on the club.

Sixteen of the Riders have scored at least one goal. Eighteen players have collected at least one assist, which is almost everyone on the team.

Even Chris Birdsall, the top goalie, has an assist.

Warriors click on Senior Night

In a hit-and-miss year, the Washington volleyball team has always had the parts for a peak performance.

At last, on Senior Night in their home gym Tuesday, the Warriors put all the pieces together and closed out the regular season with a decisive three-set thumping of Linn-Mar.

By winning 25-21, 25-20, 25-19, they overcame a couple of bugaboos that have plagued them all year: When they grabbed a lead, they didn't let go. And when they fell behind, they rallied back.

“We've been so close in so many games,” said senior co-captain Dani Franklin. “We've been right there.

“Tonight, we were finally able to get over the hill. We stayed calm and just kept pushing.”

No.9 Eagles sweep Indian Hills

The Indian Hills volleyball team arrived at Johnson Hall Tuesday night with three women from Brazil, another player from Puerto Rico and four women who stood 6-foot-2.

The smaller Kirkwood Eagles never blinked.

The ninth-ranked Eagles swept the Warriors, 25-22, 25-18, 25-13, with an impressive performance on Sophomore Night at home.

"We are not going to over-size that many opponents," said Kirkwood Coach Jill Williams. "But we've kept the faith in the style of play that we have ... the speed and some good shot selection and being solid. That's just our style."
