No.8 KCC volleyball team ready to go

The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team has been ranked No.8 in the first poll of NJCAA Division II teams for the 2013 campaign.

As far as Coach Jill Williams is concerned, the No.8 ranking is perfect. It's not too high and not too low. It shows respect for the program, yet tells the Eagles they have work to do to reach the upper echelon.

In other words, it's perfect.

Kirkwood opens the season Friday and Saturday with four matches at the Southeastern Volleyball Jamboree in West Burlington against good competition.

Bandits snap Kernels' streak at 8

DAVENPORT - Jose Berrios returned to the mound for the Cedar Rapids Kernels Thursday night after spending a week on the disabled list with a right elbow contusion.

The 19 year-old right-hander shut the Quad Cities River Bandits down without a hit for the first three innings, but things turned sour after that and the Bandits snapped the Kernels’ eight-game winning streak with a 7-1 win over Cedar Rapids in front of 3,882 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

The Kernels rapped 11 hits, seven during the game’s first four innings, but managed just a single run. Adam Brett Walker opened the fourth inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Bo Altobelli.

Kehe brings Hall of Fame resume to Linn-Mar

How to treat people, stay focused, strive for a common goal, communicate effectively, rebound after a loss, become a productive citizen, give back, multi-task and manage your time.

Those are a few of the lessons you can learn from playing volleyball, according to Teresa Kehe, who is beginning her first year as Linn-Mar’s head volleyball coach.

A member of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame who has already achieved major success at both the high school and college levels, Kehe is returning to the prep ranks this fall to do the thing she loves best: Teach.

“We’re not about wins and losses,” she says. “We’re about development of the individual as well as the team, preparing them for future life.”

The chance to rebuild a Linn-Mar program that fell to the conference cellar last year is a homecoming of sorts for Kehe, who grew up in Cedar Rapids — as Teresa Langguth — and played on the inaugural Jefferson High School volleyball team from 1974 to 1977.

Kernels reach milestone with 80th win

DAVENPORT —  The Cedar Rapids Kernels have something in common with the Mississippi River these days.

Just like Ol' Man River, the Kernels keep rolling along.

Cedar Rapids won its eighth straight game Wednesday night with a 6-1 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park along the banks of the Mississippi.

It was the Kernels' 80th victory of the season, marking only the 10th time since pro baseball began in Cedar Rapids in 1890 that the local team has won 80 games or more.

"Oh, wow," said Kernels skipper Jake Mauer when informed of the milestone. "That's something else, for as many good teams that have come through Cedar Rapids."

Cedar Rapids has opened a 6 1/2-game lead over the River Bandits in the Western Division of the Midwest League for the second half of the season. The Kernels have a 40-18 mark for the second half, compared with a 40-28 record for the first half of the season when they finished second in the Western Division and clinched a playoff berth.

Their overall mark of 80-46 is the best record in the Midwest League.
