Kernels face No.1 pick Appel Tuesday

Mark Appel can throw a baseball 100 mph and hopes to play in the Major Leagues with the Houston Astros as early as next season.

That's probably not good news for the struggling Cedar Rapids Kernels, who have to face Appel in a Class A Midwest League game Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels collected only four hits and lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 6-2, before 2,176 fans at the stadium Monday night and now have to battle one of the top pitchers in the minor leagues.

Appel, the No.1 overall pick in the draft this year from Stanford, unobtrusively sat in the stands Monday, charting pitches with a couple of his teammates and getting ready for his next start.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Placed on disabled list June 30 with fractured rib. Expected to return Sept. 1. Season stats: G - 44, Avg. - .295, AB - 112, H - 33, HR - 4, RBI - 15, SB - 1.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - The Quakes were not scheduled to play Monday. Season stats: G - 100, Avg. - .304, AB - 382, H - 116, HR - 24, RBI - 74, SB - 12.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at third base Monday and was 0-for-2 in the Lugnuts' 2-0 loss at Fort Wayne. Season stats: G - 91, Avg. - .179, AB - 290, H - 52, HR - 5, RBI - 22, SB - 0.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar, Bowling Green (Rays)) - Pitched 2.2 innings in relief Monday and gave up three hits and one run while striking out three in the Hot Rods' 8-7, 15-inning loss to South Bend. Season stats: W - 1. L - 0. Sv - 0. ERA - 2.25. G - 2. IP - 4. H - 4. BB - 0. SO - 4.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (Washington, GCL Twins (Twins)) - Started at third base Monday and was 0-for-4 in the Twins' 2-0 win over the GCL Rays. Season stats: G - 29, Avg. - .240, AB - 100, H - 24, HR - 1, RBI - 13, SB - 3.

Worley's sizzling 63 nets City Am title

Dane Worley shot a final round 63 at Ellis Park golf course Sunday to repeat as champion of the Men's City Amateur.

Worley finished two shots ahead of Justin Pansegrau, who shot a 70 Sunday.

Second-round leader Ryan Schrimper shot a 78 in the final round and faded to third place, six shots behind Worley.

Stroschein wins Metro Spotlight award

Austin Stroschein of Linn-Mar High School has been named the first winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school boys, presented by the Metro Sports Report.

Stroschein helped the Lions reach the Class 4A state baseball tournament and finish with a 27-16 record. He compiled an 8-1 record and 1.63 ERA on the mound and hit .365 with a home run and 27 RBIs at the plate.

Stroschein was named a first-team pitcher on the Mississippi Valley Conference all-star team and also made the first team on the Class 4A all-district squad. He will continue his baseball career at DMACC next season.

Hansen wins Metro Spotlight award

Maddie Hansen of Cedar Rapids Jefferson has been named the first winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls, as presented by the Metro Sports Report.

Hansen, a power-hitting catcher, helped the J-Hawks finish fifth in the Class 5A state tournament this year and compile a 33-12 record.

Hansen hit .500 with seven home runs and 69 RBIs as a sophomore. She led the Mississippi Valley Conference and Class 5A in RBIs and finished second overall in the state. She's also an accomplished catcher and committed only one error for a fielding percentage of .997.
