Prairie stuns No.4 PV for trip to state

BETTENDORF - Joe Yegge made a bold promise to the members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team when he became their new head coach.

"I told them when I took the job in the fall, if they did everything we asked, I promised them we'd get to state," Yegge said with a slightly mischievous smile.

It came true Tuesday night.

Prairie shocked No.4 Pleasant Valley, 3-2, in the regional finals in Bettendorf and claimed its first trip to the state tournament.

Prairie (28-14) will face No.2 Ankeny (32-10) in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament in Fort Dodge on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Wyant tosses gem, but Lions miss title

Justin Wyant knew he had to pitch a strong game Monday night for the Linn-Mar Lions to have any chance of winning a Mississippi Valley Conference title.

He performed admirably, but the Lions fell short anyway.

Wyant tossed a no-hitter as Linn-Mar walloped Kennedy, 12-0 in five innings, in the second game of their MVC doubleheader at the Linn-Mar complex.

Kennedy won the opener, 3-2, and that outcome cost the Lions dearly in the conference race.

Walker clouts 2 homers in Kernels loss

Cedar Rapids Kernels slugger Adam Brett Walker planned to relax Monday night and watch the Major League Home Run Derby on ESPN.

"That's always fun, especially to see how far they go," he said. "That's always nice."

That could be him in the Home Run Derby some day if he keeps this up much longer.

Walker belted two more impressive homers Monday afternoon, including a towering drive that traveled at least 450 feet, but they weren't enough to prevent the Kernels from dropping a 6-5 decision to the Bowling Green Hot Rods before 3,136 fans on a steamy day at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
