Stretch run getting bumpy for Kernels

What appeared to be a comfortable run to a first half championship is becoming a little uncomfortable for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

With nine games to play before the All-Star Game in Dayton, the Kernels' lead in the Western Division of the Midwest League is down to 2 1/2 games after a 6-1 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits before a crowd of 4,001 on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Cedar Rapids' cushion over Quad Cities was shaved to three games as the River Bandits got outstanding pitching from their bullpen to take the decisive game of the three-game set.

'Secret Weapon' helps Saints at state

DES MOINES - Katie Ives had to wait patiently for several months before finally getting a chance to play soccer for the Xavier Saints this season.

It was worth the wait.

Ives scored her first goal of the year Thursday to help the top-ranked Saints clip ADM/Van Meter, 4-1, in the opening round of the Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines.

Xavier (17-1) will face fourth-ranked Pella (18-1) in the semifinals Friday at 4:45 p.m. at the Cownie Sports Complex.

Olson helps J-Hawks split with Saints

Alyssa Olson doesn’t pitch the first game of doubleheaders for Cedar Rapids Jefferson, but that doesn’t mean the sophomore isn’t learning while watching from the dugout.

Olson went to school during the opener of Thursday night’s Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill against Cedar Rapids Xavier.

The Saints dominated Game 1, rapping out 14 hits against two other J-Hawk pitchers en route to an impressive 11-4 victory at Jefferson.

It was a different story in the nightcap.

Olson struck out the first nine Saints hitters she saw and retired the first 15 in a row, leading the J-Hawks to a 5-0 win and a split in the battle of state-ranked teams.

Lions blanked at state soccer again

DES MOINES - The Linn-Mar Lions are young. They hope to come back. But truth be told, they're tired of shooting blanks at the girls state soccer tournament.

Linn-Mar failed to mount an attack Thursday and lost to Waukee, 3-0, in the first round of the Class 3A tournament at the Cownie Sports Complex in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar has made four trips to the state tournament and has been shut out in the first round each time.

"Yeah, we wanted it," said sophomore Olivia Garcia, "but we couldn't get it this time."
