There are 14 seniors on the Prairie girls track team, and until Tuesday night they’d never won their own invitational meet.
Not only did they break the jinx, but the Hawks blew away the field in a strong eight-team matchup.
By winning four individual events and three relays, Prairie scored 157 points. Runner-up Iowa City West totaled 99.5 points; far behind were good squads from Davenport West, Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Washington.

Dairo Gonzalez did not speak a word of English when he moved from Cuba to Florida with his family when he was 14 years old, but he could sure swing a baseball bat.
He speaks English very well now. And he can still swing that bat.
Gonzalez, now 19 and a sophomore a Kirkwood Community College, went on a rampage last week when he went 17 for 30 with six homers and 18 RBIs to help the Eagles (27-13) get on the winning path again.

Byron Buxton belted a bomb in his second at-bat Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
While that blast staked the Kernels to a 4-0 lead, it was a bunt he laid down in the eighth inning that provided the winning margin in a 5-4 win that ran the Kernels' winning streak to nine games. The Midwest League baseball game was played before a crowd of 1,445 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
One more win and the Kernels get to strap on the feedbag at the Ox Yoke Inn in the Amana Colonies as guests of the club's board of directors.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Iowa (Cubs)) - Started in right field Tuesday and was 0-for-4 in the I-Cubs' 7-2 win over Round Rock. Season stats: G - 20, Avg. - .356, AB - 73, H - 26, HR - 6, RBI - 16, SB - 1.
A.J. Puk has decided to play baseball for Cedar Rapids Washington this season, Coach Tony Lombardi confirmed Tuesday morning.
"That is true," Lombardi responded in an e-mail.
Puk, a 6-foot-6 lefthanded pitcher and first baseman, signed a national letter-of-intent with the University of Florida last November and is considered a top prospect for the Major League draft this June.
