Tunnell was barrier breaker for CR club

The new Jackie Robinson biographical film “42” opens nationwide Friday. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey to tell the story of the historic signing by the Brooklyn Dodgers and breaking baseball’s color barrier.

Cedar Rapids professional baseball has a similar story to share. On June 15, 1949, future Pro Football Hall of Fame member Emlen Tunnell became the first African American to appear in a minor league baseball game in Iowa - following Robinson’s signing - when he played left field for the Cedar Rapids Rockets.

Tunnell went 2-for-5 in his pro debut while breaking the Central Association’s color barrier. He played in five games over four days for Cedar Rapids gathering five hits in 18 plate appearances while playing in the outfield for the Rockets.

McDermott strongly endorses Petersen

Bryan Petersen is only 25 years old, just a few years older than the players he'll be leading next season as the interim head coach of the Kirkwood men's basketball team, but Creighton Coach Greg McDermott is confident he'll do a good job.

Petersen played and worked for McDermott at Iowa State, where he was a two-year starter at point guard during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns. He spent a season on McDermott's staff as a graduate assistant before spending two more years on the ISU staff when Fred Hoiberg succeeded McDermott as head coach.

"When we recruited him and he played for us, it was obvious that he was a coach on the floor," said McDermott. "His basketball I.Q. was off the chart.

"That was evident as a player. He was able to carry that over to his coaching career."
