Hughes captures tight 500 at MVC swim

Josh Hughes has been one of the top long-distance swimmers in Iowa during his prep career at Cedar Rapids Washington.

In fact, he probably could have swum all the way from here to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore by now if you added all his miles together in the pool.

Hughes will swim at Johns Hopkins next year and probably major in biology as he works toward a spot in the medical field. For now, he's set his sights on trying to win a state title in the 500-yard freestyle next month in Marshalltown.

Washington girls close enough to perfect

The Washington girls weren’t perfect at home Saturday afternoon against Marshalltown.

They did miss nine free throws, after all.

And once, when Warrior Coach Frank Howell called a play from the bench to go “odd right,” wispy senior point guard Colby Bjornsen went the other way.

Cougars top Ames for 9th win

Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana does not want to reveal how many basketball games he thought the Cougars would win this season, but it's probably safe to say he didn't think his club would have an attractive 9-3 record at this point.

His grin gave it away.

Kennedy found a way to win another game Saturday night with a 58-50 verdict over the Ames Little Cyclones at the Kennedy gym.

Jacobs paces No.4 Kirkwood women

ESTHERVILLE - Kianna Jacobs scored 15 points Saturday afternoon as fourth-ranked Kirkwood trimmed Iowa Lakes, 58-54, in a women's junior college ballgame in Estherville.

Whitney Henderson contributed 11 points for the Eagles (17-3, 6-0). Bianca Dufelmeier collected seven points and eight assists. Friday Chuol had six points and six rebounds.

Myangel Johnson led Iowa Lakes (7-14, 3-4) with 14 points.

Kirkwood men nipped by Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE - Kelly Madison scored 20 points Saturday afternoon as 10th-ranked Iowa Lakes edged Kirkwood, 57-55, in a men's junior college basketball game in Estherville.

Taylor Olson made four 3-pointers and led Kirkwood with 16 points. Kasey Semler hit three triples and scored 11 points for the Eagles (11-9, 3-2).

Kirkwood outscored Iowa Lakes from the field, 50-45, but the Lakers outscored the Eagles 12-5 at the foul line to spell the difference in the game.
