Prairie, Linn-Mar rank 2-3 in wrestling

Cedar Rapids Prairie is ranked No.2 and Linn-Mar is No.3 in the initial Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association Class 3A dual team rankings for the 2012-13 season.

It's a snap! Scott headed to Kansas State

Drew Scott has an unusual ability.

He can bend his knees, squat down, grab a football, look between his legs and snap the ball to a teammate who's stationed behind him, knowing a defensive lineman is getting ready to bowl him over the instant he lets go.

Scott did it time after time after time for the Xavier Saints this past season on their path to the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs.

He did it on PATs, he did it on field goals, he did it on punts.

Scott did it so well that the fifth-ranked Kansas State Wildcats have invited him to join their football team next season as a snapper for their special teams as well.

3 Metro ballplayers headed to WAC

Chicago State University is headed to the Western Athletic Conference for NCAA Division I athletics and three former Metro baseball players will be going with the Cougars, too.

Dane Mehring and Ean McNeal, a pair of Xavier High School graduates, and Linn-Mar grad Jordan Stroschein plan to enroll at Chicago State next year and play for the Cougars when they make their debut in the WAC in the 2014 campaign.

Mehring and Stroschein are sophomores at Ellsworth Community College and Mehring is a sophomore at NIACC. They'll be reunited in Chicago next year.

Chicago State announced Dec. 5 that it would be joining Cal State Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle and Utah Valley in the Western Athletic Conference.

Saulnier helping Wash swimmers as freshman

Nick Saulnier grew up in the Cedar Rapids Washington school district and comes from a family of swimmers, so he was aware of the traditions at Washington when he joined the swim team this year as a freshman.

He was aware of the 28 state titles and the 49 straight district crowns coming into this season, one of the most remarkable streaks in Iowa prep history in any sport.

He's also aware the Warriors like to dye their hair bright blond to set them apart in any pool. He normally has dark brown hair, but not anymore.

Warriors drub Regina for 6th straight

After opening the season with two losses, the unranked Cedar Rapids Washington Warrior girls are on a roll.

They soundly demolished previously unbeaten Iowa City Regina, 61-33, at home Tuesday night. The drubbing of the Class 2A 13th-ranked Regals was Washington’s sixth straight victory.

“Our goal is to go seven in a row into the (holiday) break,” said spitfire senior guard Colby Bjornsen. “Tonight, we came out and played hard right from the start.

"It’s all about defense, using our quickness to steal the ball and getting rebounds.”
