Denny leads Mississippi Division golfers

IOWA CITY - Zach Denny of Cedar Rapids Jefferson fired an even-par 72 Monday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course and opened a five-shot lead for top honors in the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Denny shot a 74 at the MVC Super Meet on Aug. 9 and has a 36-hole total of 146 heading into the final round on Sept. 24. Cole Murdock of Kennedy stands in second place at 151 and Conner Koberg of Kennedy is third at 152.

Kennedy won the Super Meet and had the best score again Monday in the divisional meet for a 36-hole total of 616. Jefferson trails in second place at 636.

Stovie suffered torn ACL; out for year

Xavier High School tailback Cal Stovie sustained a serious knee injury against Prairie Friday night and will not play again this year.

Stovie injured his knee when he was tackled after a 55-yard run on his first carry of the second half against the Hawks.

"Unfortunately, not good news for Cal," Xavier Coach Duane Schulte reported Monday morning. "He tore his ACL and is done for the season."

School spirit is neat to see

One of the great joys during my Fridays in the fall is traveling to Metro high schools with Scott Unash as part of KGYM radio’s “Tailgate Tour.’’

There is an opportunity for us to get on each campus, talk to coaches, interact with students and soak in the excitement of teenagers playing games. Each week, there is a different atmosphere, but still the same form of youthful enthusiasm that kids have at the start of the school year.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Kellen's two-run single sparked Vancouver's seven-run eighth inning and sent the Canadians past Boise, 12-9, Sunday night in the Northwest League championship game. Kellen was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. His two-run single erased a 7-6 deficit and put Vancouver ahead to stay. Vancouver  playoff totals -- BA - .294, AB - 17, R - 4, H - 5, RBI - 4, 2B - 0, 3B - 1, HR - 0, SB - 1.

 

Dukes brings 'Sunday Morning QB' to KGYM

Mark Dukes believed strongly in the old-fashioned values of being fair, balanced and well-informed during his distinguished newspaper career at The Gazette.

He brings those same qualities to his radio work at KGYM, but now he has the freedom to inject his own opinions into the conversation. He's not reluctant to express a thought, but he's not on the air to be highly critical or call for a coach to be fired.

"There are others out there on 'shock' radio or 'shock' TV that do that and that's how they get ratings, but that's not me," he said. "It's going to be reasoned criticism for me. That's who I am.

"I can't be somebody that I'm not. It's going to be reasoned criticism, and the facts to back it up."
