Sizing up the top players in Iowa prep history

Even if you check it twice, making a list is risky business. But it’s something I love to do.

An interesting discussion ensued last week on the Balbinot & Brommelkamp radio show (KGYM 1600 AM / 106.3 FM). It started with opinions as to how Linn-Mar’s Marcus Paige fits into an all-time Iowa high school team and developed into people making lists of their starting five in state boys’ basketball history.

I took that as an invitation to participate, and perhaps you will too.

Lists must always have criteria. In this case, I took into consideration the player’s high school, college and professional career. I looked at averages, longevity, honors and other circumstances.

For these reasons, neither Paige nor Harrison Barnes, second-year North Carolina player from Ames, made my first or second team. They might someday land squarely on an all-time team of former Iowa high schoolers  because they are two remarkably gifted players. But Paige hasn’t played a minute of college ball and Barnes’ college and pro careers are yet to be determined.

Saints hold off winless Warriors

The Washington boys’ final loss of a winless season Monday night went pretty much the way of their woeful season as a whole.

The Warriors dug themselves a hole early and never seemed to find a rhythm.

But, when things looked hopeless, they somehow bucked up fought with fury right to the finish.

Xavier won the home court Class 4A substate tournament quarterfinal, 59-44, but Saints Coach Matt Jenkins knew all along it wouldn’t be a cake walk.  “That’s not a team that’s going to lie down,” he said after his team advanced to a Friday showdown at Kennedy against the Cougars.  “In my eyes, they’re a scary team that can hurt you.”

Last-second layup ends Marion's season

The Marion boys basketball season ended in heartbreak Monday night.

Robbie Takes' layup in the closing seconds lifted Anamosa past Marion, 51-50, in a Class 3A district tournament game at Marion.

Anamosa (9-14) advances to play Davenport Assumption on Thursday at Muscatine. Marion's season ended at 9-13.

Prairie ends season with loss at City High

IOWA CITY - They weren't exactly the hard-luck Hawks, but Cedar Rapids Prairie probably deserved a better fate this season in Year 2 under James Moses.

The Hawks led Linn-Mar by 20 points last month, only to lose by one point at the buzzer. They also dropped games by 2, 3 and 4 points and lost a total of eight games by single digits.

It happened again Monday night in a Class 4A substate game, and now the season is over.

Jerel Moore scored 16 points and made several pretty passes as Iowa City High trimmed Prairie, 50-42, in a substate quarterfinal in the Iowa City gymnasium.

Prairie ended its season with a 9-13 record, a marked improvement over last year's 3-19 campaign.

Fiala races into the alley for Prairie

When he dropped a bowling ball on his little foot at the age of five or so, a bawling Brogan Fiala told everyone around he never wanted to see one of those things again.

So it’s funny that this Friday the 17-year-old Prairie senior will be the anchor for the school’s boys bowling team as it vies for the state championship at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines. And based on his score at the district meet last week, he’ll also be one of the top contenders for individual honors.

“After crushing my toes that time, I sure didn’t think I’d ever be a bowler,” says Brogan, the son of Tami and Scott Fiala of Fairfax.
