Cain joins Garman at North Dakota

It wasn't a difficult decision for Ryan Cain when he was invited to join the University of North Dakota football program last weekend.

One of his best friends, North Dakota freshman and former Linn-Mar standout Jer Garman, was Cain's host during his recruiting visit to Grand Forks.

"We always wanted to play together, so it was kind of like a dream come true," said Cain, a standout cornerback, receiver and kick returner for the Washington football team.

Griffin works extra hard for MVC title

IOWA CITY - Damon Griffin spends all day in school, practices for several hours with the Linn-Mar wrestling team and works out some more with an ex-Marine at home.

All that hard work paid off Saturday.

Griffin had an impressive day at the Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling tournament and grabbed the 120-pound title with four straight victories, capped by a 9-0 major decision over Ernest Willis of Iowa City West in the finals.

Strait leads Kennedy girls past Decorah

Courtney Strait’s senior leadership proved to be the determining factor Saturday night as Kennedy defeated Decorah in a non-conference girls basketball game, 59-45, at Kennedy.

Strait scored 15 first-half points, including three 3-point baskets, and added seven second-half points to finish with 22.

“It was a game that we needed our senior to take charge in and she did,” said Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff, regarding Strait’s performance.  “She really played a great game when we needed her to.

Washington drops a toughie to Waukee

They may be the best team in the state with six losses, but that’s little consolation for the Washington Warrior girls basketball team that fell to ninth-ranked Waukee, 56-54, in a non-conference battle Saturday night at the Warrior gym.

No. 7 Washington (10-6) has now lost three of its last five games. Four of the Warriors' six losses have been by five points or less.

Waukee Coach Chris Guess enjoyed the payback win.

Balanced attack keys Kennedy boys

FULTON, Ill. - Kennedy did not have anyone score more than nine points, but the balanced Cougars blew away Fulton, Ill., 62-30, Saturday night in a non-conference boys basketball game.

Cody Bell scored nine points to lead the Cougars (11-4).

Kennedy rebounded from an embarrassing 40-22 loss to Iowa City High on Friday night when the Cougars shot just 20 percent.
