J-Hawks own longest 4A skid in state

Sometimes the football gods have a wicked sense of humor.

Take the case of the poor Jefferson J-Hawks, for instance. They had another insult tacked onto their backs this week without even playing a game.

Jefferson has lost 18 straight games and been outscored by a wide margin, 762-150, during the skid, but until this week they shared the longest losing streak in Class 4A with Des Moines Hoover. Then something unusual happened.

Indianola had to forfeit a game to Hoover for using an eligible player, and that ended Hoover's 18-game losing streak and left the J-Hawks alone at the top of the list. It's not the kind of ignominious list that anyone wants to lead.

"That's why I don't read the papers," Jefferson Coach Jim Womochil said after practice Wednesday.

The J-Hawks have not won a ballgame since topping Dubuque Senior, 20-13, on Sept. 25, 2009. It's been more than two years now and the equivalent of two full seasons.

"It's embarrassing for our kids, but it's something we can't focus on," Womochil said. "Otherwise the negativity will take over and you forget about what you're trying to get accomplished.

"That's stuff for the media and the naysayers to focus on," he said. "We're not focusing on that right now. We're focusing on trying to get better this year."

Josh Evans enjoys view from the top

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans is not merely the top cross country runner in the Mississippi Valley Conference anymore.

He's now one of the best runners in the state and has been ranked No. 1 by the Iowa Track Coaches Association the past two weeks.

Evans showed why Tuesday when he won the Linn-Mar Invitational at the Tuma Soccer Complex by 29 seconds.

Evans vaulted to the No. 1 spot in the state rankings after a strong second-place showing Sept. 17 at the Heartland Classic in Ames, where he beat runners who had been ranked 1-2 in Iowa.

Evans climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 in last week's rankings based on that strong performance in Ames and stayed No. 1 in this week's poll. He's just a sophomore and still only 15 years old, yet he's already considered the top distance runner in Iowa.

"It's pretty cool to see that," he said Tuesday after winning the Linn-Mar Invitational in 15 minutes, 34 seconds over the flat 5-kilometer course. "It will be fun the next couple of years."

Xavier claims Valley division golf crown

Xavier boys golf coach Tim O'Brien says the Saints have a championship banner from the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet in 2001, but he's not aware of any other golf pennants at the school.

There will be now.

Xavier turned in a solid performance at Airport National Tuesday and captured the Valley Division title in the MVC by 13 strokes over Cedar Falls.

"We came in with a 13-stroke lead over Cedar Falls and ended today with a 13-stroke lead over Cedar Falls," O'Brien noted. "I was really pleased that we held serve with them."

The Mississippi Valley Conference determines its divisonal golf champions with a series of three meets at three different courses on three different days. The Saints emerged on top.

McCann, Kennedy claim MVC division titles

WATERLOO - The rain could not stop Linn-Mar senior Tyler McCann from winning a Mississippi Valley Conference golf title Monday in Waterloo.

It couldn't stop the Kennedy Cougars, either.

McCann grabbed medalist honors in the Mississippi Division by holding off the field on a wet day at the Irv Warren Course.

Kennedy captured the team championship by a whopping 35 strokes ahead of Linn-Mar.

The Mississippi Valley Conference bases its golf title on a series of three events. McCann fired a 67 in the first event and a 68 in the second outing, and his 4-over-par 40 Monday gave him a slim one-shot victory over Cody Bell and Mitchell Martin of Kennedy in the overall standings.

McCann finished his three rounds at 175, with Bell and Martin a stroke back at 176. Brigham Stewart of Kennedy finished at 178, giving the Cougars a 2-3-4 showing.

Martin had the best round Monday with a 2-under-par 34.

Most of the golfers played more than nine holes Monday, but tournament directors ruled that only the first nine holes would count to make it fair for everyone when heavy rains hit the course.

The Valley Division meet that was scheduled at Airport National in Cedar Rapids Monday was rained out and rescheduled for Tuesday morning.

Scott's mid-season football report

A quick look at all eight Metro football teams at the halfway mark of the 2011 season. The teams appear in alphabetical order:

CEDAR VALLEY CHRISTIAN (0-4)

The first year of football has ended for the Huskies and it went as was to be expected for a first-year football school. The win-loss record was not important for the Huskies this fall. What was important was that they learn the game and get kids excited to play the game. Let's remember, the Huskies only had one player with any football experience coming into the year.

What needs to be done in the second half?

Cedar Valley will be playing some JV games in the next few weeks. That is just what the doctor ordered. Get the kids more experience and more practice, just avoid any injuries.

JEFFERSON (0-5)

If you're a football fan you have to feel for Coach Jim Womochil and the J-Hawks. After a somewhat promising start to the season, the injury bug hit with a vengeance once again and Jefferson is moving personnel all around the field. That usually doesn't bode well in the tough MVC. Still, there are chances for a Jefferson win coming up and that would be a great tonic.
