No.2 Little Hawks smash No.7 Saints

If the Iowa Hawkeyes run out of tailbacks this season, maybe they could borrow the kid who plays for Iowa City High.

He's pretty good. So are his teammates.

Ronald Thompson rambled for 209 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as the second-ranked Little Hawks smashed No.7 Xavier, 52-24, on homecoming at Saints Field.

Xavier (3-1) had not allowed a point in three games this season with shutouts of Kennedy, Prairie and Dubuque Hempstead, but the Little Hawks play in a different league.

"We looked forward to putting 52 up on them," City High quarterback Jasper Washington remarked. "We looked forward to letting them know that we are the big dogs in this conference."

Those big dogs barked all night.

"Coach told us this is the hardest team we've played all year and their defense is going to be great," Thompson said. "So we came in with the mindset that we were going to destroy them, and that's what we did."

Xavier pulled within 24-17 in the third quarter on a 76-yard bomb from Reggie Schulte to Corbin Woods, but Iowa City High (4-0) turned on the after-burners. Thompson made it 45-24 with a 75-yard gallop, then Amos Lavela made it 52-24 with a 54-yard dash.

Storla steams into record book with 7 TDs

Senior Colton Storla gave himself and Marion football fans a birthday to remember.

Storla had a career night on his 18th birthday at Thomas Park Field, tying a Marion school record for touchdowns in a game with seven.

Storla and the rest of the Indian backfield ran for a combined 520 yards as they beat Anamosa in a 3A District 5 game, 58-35, Friday night.

Marion (3-1, 1-1) got back on the winning track after a disappointing 7-0 loss to Western Dubuque last Friday.

“It was more important that we improved (from last week) then it was for us to get to .500 (in the district),” Marion Coach Tony Perkins said.

No.6 Lions cruise by Waterloo West, 40-0

As they rolled to a 40-0 home win over Waterloo West Friday night, the only thing that stopped the sixth-ranked Linn-Mar Lions was the clock.

They scored both on the ground and through the air to take a 37-0 halftime lead. With the continuous clock running the rest of the way, the game was over less than a half-hour later.

Still, Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth was less than completely satisfied.

"We played a respectable game," he said. "But we still have a lot of things to work on, defensively and offensively. We saw some things we still need to correct."

Kennedy rams Dubuque Senior, 33-7

DUBUQUE - The H & H boys put on a show for the Kennedy Cougars Friday night.

Alex Hillyer carried the ball 28 times for 136 yards and Trevor Heitland rushed 15 times for 146 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Cougars stomped Dubuque Senior, 33-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the University of Dubuque stadium.

The Kennedy running game dominated the game from start to finish.

Senior took the opening kickoff and went nowhere. Kennedy (2-2) got the ball on its own 21-yard line and promptly drove 79 yards in nine plays and scored on a 35-yard pass from Chico Lizarraga to Josh Jahlas.

Heitland rushed for 130 yards in the first half with touchdown runs of 21, 20 and 15 yards. The third TD came with only 30 seconds left in the opening half.

Prairie drubbed by Iowa City West, 50-8

IOWA CITY - Sixty-seven.

No, that was not the temperature Friday night when the Iowa City West football team faced Cedar Rapids Prairie. It was much more brisk than that.

The number 67 refers to Prairie's total yards from scrimmage.

In a football game where the Iowa City West defense held Prairie to its fewest yards of the season, the Trojans steamrolled the Hawks 50-8 on a chilly September night at the Iowa City West field.

The opening snap that Prairie took on offense was a fumbled quarterback/center exchange, and it looked like something was amiss for the Hawks all night.

“We just came out really flat today,” said Prairie receiver Jason Vizzini. “They took full advantage.”
