Looking ahead with the Hawkeyes and ISU

A little bit about a lot of things ...

This week I expect Iowa's special teams and defense to play a lot better against Pittsburgh, and I think the Hawks will win by a 14-point margin after being fooled on defense against Iowa State last week.

The Cyclones deserved to win and they got it, and Steele Jantz put on one of the best shows that any quarterback could put on. But now the big story is, can he continue his inspirational play on the road against Connecticut?

If Iowa State wins that game, I think they are looking at a chance for a winning season. And Jantz as the quarterback becomes the real, legit QB.

Let's also remember that Kirk Ferentz's way in close games has been eminently successful. You really can't second-guess a coach who has taken his team to nine bowl games in 13 years.

On the Johnson-Koulianos situation, memo to DJK: Try arena football and see if the pros give you some notice. When you don't get invited to Indianapolis for the combine camp, your chances of making a 53-man roster are nil.

On the high school front, memo to the Iowa High School Athletic Association: You know that you're going to a district setup for Class 4A. Why do I know that? History illustrates, always send out a questionnaire when the decision has already been made.

The biggest high school game of the week will be Iowa City High at Xavier. The Saints are a well-organized unit, capable of playing winning football, and I would suggest this would be the Little Hawks' biggest test of the year.
