Warriors snap Saints' 35-game streak

The Washington girls soccer team did what nobody had done in 35 straight games -- beat Xavier.

Class 3A No. 8 Washington (6-1, 6-0 MVC) scored two first-half goals and managed to keep Class 2A No. 1 Xavier (7-1, 5-1) out of the net, handing the Saints their first loss since 2009 on a windy Saturday at Kingston Stadium, 2-0.

“Unbelievable. Unbelievable,” said an elated Washington Coach Sean McCoy. “We didn’t have a lot of pressure on us this game, but we definitely had a game plan and the kids did what they were asked to do and they produced results.”

Kennedy girls stun No. 1 Iowa City West

After falling behind top-ranked Iowa City West early in the second half, the Kennedy girls soccer team came back for a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday morning at Kennedy.

The No. 7 Cougars (5-1, 4-1 MVC) earned the victory over the Trojans (6-1, 5-1) just 15 seconds into the second overtime period when junior Grace Reinhart got the ball in the box and beat the keeper for the 2-1 win.

“Annie (Feltes) played me the ball and I knew the keeper couldn’t get there, so I hustled and scored,” Reinhart said. “The coaches told me to fly and so I just went and scored.”

In the overtime period, Kennedy was looking to take advantage of an injury sustained by a West defender late in regulation.

“We knew that one of their talented players got injured, so we were looking to expose their outside backs on either side and so we went in there with a game plan,” Kennedy Coach Homer Screws said.

Sam Joens wins discus at Drake

DES MOINES - Most of the guys who competed against Sam Joens in the discus Friday at the Drake Relays looked like heavyweight wrestlers or offensive linemen.

"Yeah, I noticed," said Joens, a slender fellow for this event at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds.

The Cedar Rapids Prairie senior proved that sheer size isn't everything when it comes to tossing the discus a long way.

Joens uncorked a heave of 176 feet, 5 inches on his sixth and final throw to capture the title against all those brawny fellows on a sunny, breezy morning in Des Moines.

Joens was languishing in sixth place when he entered the ring for the final time in the 102nd Drake Relays. His best toss at that point was 163-8, more than 10 feet behind Michael Smithburg of Fairfield.

Joens leaned into his last throw and let it rip. Fans cheered while the discus was in the air, sensing a majestic and dramatic toss. Joens knew he nailed it.

Metro athletes shine on Day 2 at Drake

DES MOINES - The 102nd Drake Relays brought out the best in Metro track athletes Friday.

Sam Joens of Cedar Rapids Prairie won the boys discus title (see separate story), but he had lots of company in the spotlight on a breezy, 70-degree day in Des Moines.

Caleb Mere of Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished a strong second in the boys long jump at 23 feet and set a school record in the process.

Will Griffin and Alex Carr of Cedar Rapids Washington officially tied for second place in the 100 meter dash, but Griffin was actually one-thousandth of a second faster than Carr.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson finished second in the girls 4x200 relay with Malya Rattliffe, Summer Carber, Taylor Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer passing the baton in style.
