Bucknam: Dunn still welcome at Arkansas

Linn-Mar star Kyle Dunn is still welcome to join the University of Arkansas track team despite his recent arrest for drunk driving, Arkansas Coach Chris Bucknam said Tuesday.

Bucknam expressed disappointment with the incident, but said Dunn's arrest will not affect his scholarship with the Razorbacks.

"I will say this: He called us right away and told us what had happened," Bucknam told the Metro Sports Report. "We appreciated the fact that I heard about it from him before anyone called me about it.

"He's an Arkansas signee," said Bucknam, who previously was head coach at the University of Northern Iowa. "Obviously we understand the gravity of the situation and we're glad nobody got hurt.

"I don't want to underestimate the seriousness of what he did and hope it doesn't happen again."

Dunn was arrested at 1:57 a.m. Saturday and charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to maintain control of a vehicle. Linn-Mar High School has suspended him from three track meets, including the Drake Relays next week.

Zach Bohannon leaving Air Force

Zach Bohannon has decided to leave the Air Force Academy and play college basketball closer to home, which raises an interesting possibility for the Bohannon family.

Is Zach Bohannon interested in playing at the University of Northern Iowa with his younger brother Matt, who will be joining the Panthers as a freshman next season?

Zach Bohannon is a 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 4.3 points for Air Force this past season as a sophomore. He'll have two years of eligibility at his next school, beginning with the 2012-13 campaign after he takes a redshirt year.

Matt Bohannon is a 6-foot-3 all-state guard who helped Linn-Mar win the Class 4A state title this year. Zach Bohannon helped Linn-Mar win a state title in 2007 as a sophomore.

Zach Bohannon told the Colorado Springs Gazette that he's leaving the Air Force Academy because he has decided not to pursue a military career. Bohannon would have been a junior at Air Force this fall, and a cadet's military commitment begins with his junior year at the academy, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Galbraith juggles tennis, soccer, books

You'll have to forgive Riley Galbraith if he gets home some nights and plops right into bed.

Tuesday could have been one of those days for the talented junior at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School, but his tennis and soccer matches were rained out.

Galbraith's school day starts at 7 a.m. with a zero-hour class in pre-calculus, followed by a full load that includes Advanced Placement classes in language/composition, U.S. history and chemistry.

He was supposed to have a varsity tennis match Tuesday at 4 p.m. against the Xavier Saints at Xavier, followed by a varsity soccer game Tuesday night against Waterloo West at Kennedy, but inclement weather claimed both events.

Galbraith plays No.1 singles for the tennis team, is a starting midfielder for the third-ranked soccer team and carries a GPA that's either right above or right below 4.0.

He's a busy boy.

"Sometimes I fall asleep with a book in my hand," he said.

He'll crack the books fairly late at night, depending on the workload, and tries to get his homework and assignments done during the day whenever possible.

Galbraith likes being busy, and he likes tennis and soccer too much to pick a favorite.

"That's kind of the choice I've made," he said. "I've decided I'd rather sacrifice some sleep than quit one or the other."

Galbraith has compiled an 11-1 record at No.1 singles for the Kennedy tennis team. His only loss was to Iowa City West sophomore Kyle Appel, his summer doubles partner, in the Dave Meyer Warrior Invitational on April 9.

Former Metro preps ready to pad up again

High school competition sometimes is difficult to get out of your system. Years after your eligibility is completed, you may still yearn for one more game, one more chance at glory, one more chance just to mix it up.

If that’s you, listen up.

Alumni Football USA is coming to Iowa this summer. It’s a 26-year-old nationwide organization that puts on alumni football games, giving former players one more opportunity to get on the field and high schools a chance to raise money for the athletic department.

Bob Cazet started Alumni Football USA after his playing career in St. Helena, Calif., in Napa Valley.

“We started it in 1985,’’ Cazet said. “I wanted to play one more game and a lot of others guys felt the same way. We got together and players that played in odd number years played the even number years. It came off well. My college buddies would tell me, ‘What about us’?’’

Alumni Football USA has held games in about 15 states but this is its first foray into Iowa.  Dozens of former Iowa high school players, including Metro athletes, have signed up at the Alumni Football USA website.

Jefferson already has signed up the maximum 40 players and has about a dozen more on a waiting list. Among those interested is Blake Tiedtke, who led the J-Hawks to an unbeaten regular season in 2000 and went on to play at Nebraska.

Kennedy has about 30 players ready to go. Other Metro schools have fewer signed up.

Linn-Mar High School track star Kyle Dunn was arrested at 1:57 a.m. Saturday on a charge of drunk driving and will miss the Drake Relays and two other meets, according to a report Monday on the Iowa Prep Sports website.

Dunn was charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to maintain control of a vehicle, according to Iowa Prep Sports.

Dunn is the defending Class 4A state champion in the 400 hurdles and the 400 dash. He has signed a letter of intent to run track at the University of Arkansas next season.

Dunn will serve a three-meet suspension for violating school rules at Linn-Mar, according to the website report. He will miss the Prairie Relays and Forward Relays this week and will miss the prestigious Drake Relays next week.
