Kirkwood women roll by Southwestern

CRESTON - Paige Bradford collected a double-double Saturday as the top-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team smashed Southwestern, 87-49, in an ICCAC conference game.

Bradford finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and five assists for the Eagles (21-2, 8-1).

Kemara Watson scored 14 points, Amara Lipsey 13 and Kortney Drake 12 for Kirkwood.

Jordan Simone scored 12 points for Southwestern (8-14, 3-6).

No. 14 KCC men stay tied for No. 1

CRESTON - The 14th-ranked Kirkwood men's basketball team strolled by Southwestern, 98-65, Saturday to stay in a three-way tie for first place in the ICCAC conference.

The Eagles are 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the league, tied with DMACC and Iowa Lakes at the top of the standings.

Devonte Thedford finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for Kirkwood in a balanced attack. Jamal Stephenson scored 15 points, DJ Purnell 14, Jalen Taylor 14 and Luke Appel 13 for the Eagles.

Purnell, Niko Gosnell and Seybian Sims had eight rebounds. Taylor hit four 3-pointers off the bench.

Mount Mercy spikers fall short

Missouri Valley rallied to trim Mount Mercy, 3-2, in a men's volleyball match at the Hennessey Recreation Center Saturday night.

Mount Mercy bolted to a 2-0 lead with victories in the first two sets, but Missouri Valley won the next three sets to prevail 19-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 15-9.

Julian Armendano led the Mustangs with 15 kills and 12 digs. Ben Steffen had 13 kills and Evan Gaskill 12.

Ben Ruggles rolled up 41 assists and had 15 digs for Mount Mercy (1-2, 1-2). Matt Belling had 14 digs and Gaskill 13. Steffen blocked six shots.

Missouri Valley beats Mustang women

The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to Missouri Valley,  86-54, in a Heart of America Conference game Saturday at the Hennessey  Recreation Center.

Brianna Thomas scored 12 points for the Mustangs (4-17, 1-15). Sarah  Moffett and Chailey Cabalis had 10 points apiece.

Payton Funk collected 12 points for Missouri Valley (4-16, 3-14).

Mustang men's volleyball sweeps Graceland

Ben Steffen collected eight kills and five blocks Friday night as the  Mount Mercy men's volleyball team swept Graceland, 25-18, 25-17,  25-22, in a Heart of America Conference match at the Hennessey  Recreation Center.

The Mustangs squared their records at 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the  league, following a season-opening loss to top-ranked Grand View.

Evan Gaskill matched Steffen with eight kills for the Mutsangs.
