WAVERLY - Xavier's Clint Lembeck won the 126-pound title Saturday at the Class 3A District 8 wrestling meet.

Lembeck and Sean Ickes, who placed second at 170, qualified for the state wrestling tournament next week at Des Moines.

Xavier finished sixth in the eight-team district. Third-ranked Waverly Shell-Rock rolled to the title with 249 points. Western Dubuque was second with 189.

Waverly-Shell Rock advanced nine wrestlers to the state tournament.

Lembeck beat Western Dubuque's Austin Hosch, 8-6, in overtime in the championship bout. He pinned his first two opponents to reach the final.

Ickes lost an 8-3 decision to Waverly-Shell Rock's Thomas Foy in the first-place bout. He won his first two matches, including a 3-1 decision over Marshalltown's Derek Mann. That win propelled Ickes to second-place and a spot in the state meet over Mann, who battled back through the loser's bracket to finish third.

Jeff Vipond at 106 and Nick Drahozal at 145 posted third-place finishes for the Saints.
