C.R. Washington girls blitz Linn-Mar, 64-35

Cedar Rapids Washington hosted Linn-Mar in a Class 5A regional semifinal game Saturday night and hit on all cylinders.

Washington dominated the contest, 64-35.

The Warriors (16-6) will face No. 6 Waukee (17-5) in the regional finals Tuesday night at Ankeny. The winner will advance to the state tournament.

Washington’s aggressive press, its ability to knock down the 3-point shot and its nearly flawless execution on offense were more than Linn-Mar could handle.

“I think our press was outstanding tonight,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell. “We shifted our feet and played without reaching and our ball movement was crisp and efficient.

"We had great contributions from everyone, including the bench, and we played with confidence.”

Washington had four players in double figures. The Warriors were led in scoring by Abby Herb with 15 points. Aleena Hobbs and Devin Glenski netted 13 apiece, and Dani Franklin had 12.

“It’s nice to score, but I would almost rather lead in rebounds or assists than in scoring,” said Herb. “Whatever it takes as long as we win.”

Glenski scored her points as the first player off the bench. Madison Kramer got into early foul trouble and Glenski came in and hit three 3-pointers in the first half.

“That felt awesome,” said Glenski. “Our team just did a great job of finding the open shooters tonight, and we played well together. Our press defines who we are and it really helped us tonight.”

Kristen Eiles led Linn-Mar (10-13) with 10 points. Courtney Major scored nine points.

“They are such a good team and when they are on, there isn’t much you can do," said Linn-Mar Coach Mike Brandt. "That is a tough situation.

“They shot so well, and everything we did they had an answer for. Tonight wasn’t our night, but I am very proud of this class and what they have accomplished.”

Washington's defense disrupted the Lions most of the game.

“When you are a senior, you just go out there and put it all on the line,” said Major. “They are a good shooting team and we had a hard time adjusting to their shooting.”

Howell is looking forward to the regional finals.

“We keep getting better on defense and preventing teams from runs,” he said. “We have definitely turned in the right direction at the right time and we look forward to playing Waukee.”

Waukee edged Washington, 62-61, in a regular-season game at Waukee on Jan. 26.
