Mike Condon, an experienced sports journalist at the daily newspapers in Council Bluffs and Cedar Rapids, has joined the Metro Sports Report as a writer.

Condon worked at the Daily Nonpareil in Council Bluffs for 15 years (1985-2000) as a writer and editor. He worked at The Gazette on a full-time basis for 11 years (2000-2011) as a night desk editor and served as a sports correspondent for The Gazette the past two years.

"We are delighted to have someone with Mike's vast background and talent join our staff," Metro Sports Report president Jim Ecker said. "I have known Mike since he moved to Cedar Rapids in 2000 and we worked closely together for many years at The Gazette.

"Mike has a sharp eye for stories, is a talented writer and has the knack of building good relationships with people, including the people he's writing about. He's very knowledgeable about sports and shares our passion for local teams."

Condon graduated from Davenport Assumption High School in 1980 and was a member of the Assumption basketball team that finished second at the Class 3A state tournament. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1984 with a degree in journalism and mass communication and worked at the Daily Iowan for four years.

Condon has covered a wide variety of sports during his career and will be a general assignment reporter with the Metro Sports Report.

Condon and his wife, Anne, have two sons. Ryan, 19, graduated from Linn-Mar High School in 2012 and is currently a freshman at Kirkwood Community College. Matt, 14, is an eighth grader at Oak Ridge Middle School in Marion. Anne works for the Linn-Mar school district as an educational assistant.
