Van Oort named Jefferson volleyball coach

Mary Kay Van Oort, an accomplished volleyball player and coach, has been named the new coach at Jefferson High School.

She replaces Kelly Phelan, who resigned in January.

Van Oort played volleyball at the University of Notre Dame and was a two-time MVP. She played pro volleyball in France for one year and with the Iowa Blizzard for one season.

Van Oort has served as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University, Mount Mercy University and Kirkwood Community College. She also has been the co-head coach of the Rapid Spikers Club 16U team and coached at the Taft and Roosevelt middle schools in Cedar Rapids.

"Mary Kay Van Oort has a great volleyball background as both a player and a coach," said Jefferson activities director Chris Deam. "She has a lot of enthusiasm for the Jefferson volleyball program and student-athletes and is eager to get started."
