No penalties for Linn-Mar wrestling

The Linn-Mar High School wrestling team will not be penalized for withholding many of its varsity wrestlers from the state dual meet tournament in February, Coach Doug Streicher told the Metro Sports Report Monday.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) accepted Linn-Mar's explanation that the varsity wrestlers were withheld from the tournament due to injuries.

The IHSAA investigated whether Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Prairie acted improperly at the state dual meet tournament in Des Moines by not using all of their top guys.

Linn-Mar received its letter from the IHSAA on Monday, but Prairie did not receive its letter Monday and Prairie athletic director Rocky Bennett declined comment.

The state dual meet tournament was conducted the day before the traditional state tournament began. Some coaches elected to rest their individual state qualifiers and not use them in the dual meet tournament, contrary to an IHSAA directive.

Teams were allowed to withhold wrestlers due to injury, however.

Streicher said Linn-Mar has not been reprimanded or sanctioned in any way.
