Warriors top Cougars for spot in finals

Zac Gillis singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night to give Washington a 3-2 victory over Kennedy in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament.

The Warriors (2-0) will face Xavier (2-0) in the finals Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I was a bit nervous, but on the second pitch I got what I was looking for,” said Gillis. “I went oppo (opposite field) and we got the hit we needed to win the game.”

Tony Maiers gave the Cougars the early lead with an RBI single in the first inning and Joel Smetzer made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the fourth.

Noah Dostal answered with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth for Washington to knot the score at 2-2. It remained tied until Gillis delivered.

“The bases were loaded and I just stayed relaxed and took it nice and easy,” said Dostal. “I got the fastball I was looking for. It felt great.”

Matt Troendle went the distance for Washington, scattering five hits and striking out six.

“I just have to work inside and outside and try to get people out in front on my pitches,” said Troendle. “All of my pitches seemed to be working well for me tonight.”

Kennedy (1-1) will play Linn-Mar (1-1) in the consolation game for third place at Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, the surprising Warriors will be playing for the title.

“I’m really proud of these guys,” said Washington Coach Tony Lombardi. “We had a lot of reasons to give in mentally and we never did. We have a lot of work to do, but I am really pleased.”

Kennedy clipped Marion, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon in the completion of a suspended game from Monday night.

The Cougars scored twice in the seventh inning, once Monday night when Jared Staton hit a solo home run and again Tuesday when Derek Jacobus scored on a safety squeeze by Brock Skow.

“It was really exciting to tie the game up,” said Staton. “He threw me a fastball and I hit it.”

“I was happy to see that we played good defense and got good pitching,” said Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer. “Offense comes and goes, but we can build a very competitive team on pitching and defense.”

Mount Vernon beat Marion, 7-1, in a consolation game Tuesday. John Carstensen had two hits for the Marion Indians, while Trey Ryan had three hits and three RBIs for Mount Vernon.

“We have a lot of young guys and they learn quickly,” said Marion Coach Steve Fish. “We have to remember to not get wrapped up in who we are playing and concentrate on what we are playing.”
