Prairie belts Mustangs, 22-7; Jeff wins

Prairie pounded out 22 runs on 21 hits in four innings to down Mount Vernon, 22-7, in the consolation round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at Linn-Mar Wednesday night.

Ty Mougin, Caleb Davison and Blake Stallman had three hits for the Hawks (2-1) while Tyler Butz, Mitch Peters, Nic Mougin and Dylan Becker had a pair of hits.

Prairie finished fifth in the tournament.

“We finally responded offensively tonight,” said Prairie Coach Matt Thede. “Defensively we need to keep our focus, but our bats really came alive tonight. We could have a potent lineup if we can stay aggressive.”

The Hawks lost in the opening round to Linn-Mar, then defeated Jefferson and Mount Vernon.

“We really hit the ball tonight,” said Stallman. “I know that I am really seeing the ball well right now. It’s just so good to be on the field again.”

Davison lead everyone with three RBIs to go with his three hits that included a two-run triple.

“Coach has challenged us to be a little more aggressive at the plate and that approach really paid off tonight,” said Davison. “We have been in the cage a lot and it sure helps.”

Tyler Votroubek was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion, picking up his first win of the season.

Luke Eldred and Mitch Wirfs had two hits for Mount Vernon (1-2).

In the opening game of the night’s doubleheader, Jefferson (1-2) doubled up Marion (0-3) with a 10-5 win.

Ky Kramer led the J-Hawks' offensive attack with a 3-for-3 night that included a single, double and triple and produced three RBIs.

“I’ve been working really hard and getting lots of advice from my coaches and it’s really been working for me,” said Kramer.

Layne Sullivan and Lucas Larson each contributed a pair of hits and Larson drove in three runs.

“I was just trying to sit on fastballs and take them the other way,” said Larson. “It keeps me focused.”

Dylan Wright picked up the win for Jefferson, going four innings while scattering five hits and collecting five strikeouts.

“I just wanted to go out there and do my job,” said Wright. “It was nice to get that first victory of the year.”

New Jefferson Coach Kyle Rodenkirk collected his first victory at his alma mater.

“We are a young group and we battled our way through a tough bracket, so it is pretty nice to get this first win,” said Rodenkirk. “With more timely hitting, we will really improve.”

Christian Stekl, Gage Kray and Quinn Cannoy collected two hits for Marion.

“We are a work in progress,” said Marion Coach Steve Fish. “We have a disadvantage of playing a conference doubleheader tomorrow (Thursday) night, but we have learned a lot from this tournament and we can build on that."
