Hall of Fame swim coach Krizan dies

Hal Krizan, a Hall of Fame coach who led Cedar Rapids Washington to 11 state titles in boys swimming, died Saturday at age 92.

Krizan founded the Washington swim program in 1956. He led the Warriors to 10 straight titles from 1964 to 1973.

Krizan is a member of the Iowa Swimming Hall of Fame and the National Swimming Hall of Fame.

"He truly put Washington swimming 'on the map' from the beginning of the school's history," said Chris Cruise, the current boys swim coach at Washington. "He started the tradition of excellence that was surpassed and continued by Coach Voss, but it was Coach Krizan who put the Warriors on the path to excellence.

"His accomplishments speak for themselves," said Cruise. "Eleven state titles and 10 in a row is an amazing stretch of dominance."

Jim Voss succeeded Krizan as Washington's boys swim coach and won 15 state titles. Cruise won a state title in 2008 for the 27th in school history.

Krizan died Saturday at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Services will be held June 8 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
