Cougars hold on to sweep Wahlert

Matt Stevens had three hits in the nightcap and Kennedy held off Dubuque Wahlert, 8-7, to sweep a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader Friday night at Kennedy.

The Cougars scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener to pull out a 14-8 win.

Kennedy (7-8, 6-5) blew a 6-0 lead in the opener. Wahlert (8-9, 5-7) scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead.

But the Cougars sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead, 14-6. Brock Skow had a sacrifice fly and Jared Staton a run-scoring triple to tie the game. Tony Maiers singled home Staton with what proved to be the winning run. Stevens added a two-run double and Derek Jacobus a two-run single.

Jacobus had three hits to lead Kennedy's 14-hit attack. Staton, Maiers, Andrew Johnson and Ben Sass had two hits apiece. Sass scored three runs.

Kennedy starter Sammy Lizarraga was touched for seven runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out five. David King retired one batter and earned credit for the win.

The Cougars held a 7-1 lead after five innings in the nightcap.

Wahlert tallied four times in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Greg Lange's two-run double, to pull within 7-5.

Kennedy added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Lizarraga's RBI single.

Wahlert tallied twice more in the seventh and had the tying run at third base when the game ended.
