Pelfrey to make rehab start for Kernels

Minnesota Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey will make a rehab start for the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday, Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said Friday.

Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune sent out a tweet that said right-handed pitcher "Mike Pelfrey expected to make rehab start for CedarRapids , probably Monday."

Miller later tweeted that Ryan had confirmed that Pelfrey will start for the Kernels on Monday when they host Peoria at 6:35 p.m.

Pelfrey is 3-6 with a 6.11 ERA in 14 starts for the Twins. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to June 13, with a strained back.

Pelfrey, 29, is in his eighth major league season, but his first with the Twins. He signed with Minnesota as a free agent last November after seven seasons pitching for the New York Mets. He had 15 wins for the Mets in 2010, but has only 10 wins over the last three seasons.

Miller's tweet also said if all goes well for Pelfrey in his start for the Kernels, Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire said he could start for Minnesota on July 6 in Toronto.
