DUBUQUE - Caiti Peterson fired a four-hit shutout in the opener, Payton Bruner scattered five hits in the nightcap and Washington stunned No.10 Hempstead twice Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader.

Washington won the opener, 2-0, then banged out 13 hits in an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

The Warriors (12-22, 7-17) eliminated Hempstead (26-9, 16-8) from the race for the Mississippi Division title. The Mustangs fell three games behind Jefferson with two to play.

Washington has won 10 of its last 14 games.

Bria Lenten and Anne Riley drove in the Washington runs in the opener.

Lenten had four hits in the nightcap and scored twice. Bruner had two hits and drove in three runs.
