Beloit snaps Kernels streak at 11

BELOIT, Wis. – The Cedar Rapids Kernels suffered their first loss of the second half on Tuesday night, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field.

The Kernels were playing from behind most of the evening. Beloit held a 3-0 lead after two innings.

The Snappers scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Daniel Robertson reached on a fielding error by Niko Goodrum and scored from second base on Renato Nunez’s RBI double. Matt Olson singled home Nunez.

Back-to-back doubles plated a run in the Beloit second.

The Kernels scored a run in the third inning, trimming the Beloit lead to 3-1.  Jonathan Murphy singled, went to second base on an error, reached third base on a wild pitch and scored on Jorge Polanco’s sacrifice fly to right field.

The Kernels tied the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning. J.D. Williams and Murphy both singled to put men on the corners.  Goodrum’s sacrifice fly plated Williams. Murphy scored on Polanco’s RBI single.

Beloit quickly took the lead back, 5-3, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brett Vertigan and Robertson started the inning with singles.  Later in the inning, Vertigan scored on a passed ball by Kernels catcher Michael Quesada as the Snappers took the lead for good.  Robertson came home on Nunez’s RBI single.

Travis Harrison blasted a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, trimming the Snappers' lead to 5-4.  It was his 14th of the season.

Jose Berrios (5-4) got the start for the Kernels and took the loss.  He allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits over 4.1 innings.  He struck out six and walked one.  Madison Boer pitched 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed two hits.  Steve Gruver pitched one scoreless inning and one hit.

Deyvi Jimenez (1-0) picked up the win for the Snappers. He went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits.  He struck out six and walked none.

Derek De Young pitched three innings, allowing one run. Austin House collected his fourth save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Kernels play at Beloit again Wednesday night at 7.
