DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar Lions split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Dubuque Hempstead Friday and fell into a tie for first place in the Valley Division.

Linn-Mar won the first game, 8-5. Hempstead captured the second game, 11-1, in five innings.

Linn-Mar and Dubuque Wahlert are tied for first place in the Valley Division standings with 17-7 conference records. The Lions can clinch at least a tie for first place by sweeping a doubleheader from Kennedy Monday night at home.

Prairie sits in third place in the Valley standings at 16-8.

Mitch Stickney went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for Linn-Mar in the first game. Jimmy Roth had two hits. Austin Stroschein pitched a complete game for the victory. All five of Hempstead's runs were unearned.

Linn-Mar collected only four hits in the second game. The Lions are 22-13 overall.

Hempstead is 12-13 in the MVC and 15-16 overall.
