Bertsch, Kamin compete at national golf meet

DUBUQUE - Maddie Bertsch of Xavier High School and MJ Kamin from Washington High School competed in the 87th WWGA National Junior Championship at the Dubuque Golf & Country Club this past week.

Bertsch reached the semifinals of the First Flight championship playoffs Thursday before losing to Melissa VanSistine of Caledonia, Ill., in 19 holes.

Kamin defeated Rochelle Beardsley of Peosta, 4 & 3, to win the First Flight consolation bracket Friday. Kamin won the match with a birdie on the 15th hole.

 

The tournament featured 96 golfers from around the United States and the world.

Kamin shot 86-84--170 in the qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday to tie for 37th place. Bertsch shot 87-87--174 to tie for 45th in the qualifying.

The top 32 golfers advanced to match play in the championship flight. The next 16 golfers, including Kamin and Bertsch, advanced to the First Flight playoffs.

Bertsch defeated Madeline Bond of Wadsworth, Ill., 1-up, in the first round of the First Flight playoffs and defeated Mariah Peters of Blue Springs, Mo., 5 & 4, in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals.

Kamin lost to Peters in the first round of the First Flight playoffs, 4 & 2, then rebounded to win the First Flight consolation bracket.
