Steady Johnson finishes 6th at Open

Cedar Rapidian Zach Johnson found himself one shot out of the lead when he birdied the 11th hole Sunday at the British Open, but he couldn’t generate much more magic down the stretch.

In fact, no other player did except Phil Mickelson, who birdied four of his last six holes and won The Open by three shots with a closing 5-under-par 66. The victory at Muirfield in Scotland was Mickelson’s first in an Open and his fifth major overall.

Johnson closed in 1-over-par 72 with a birdie and two bogeys, finishing in a tie for sixth with Tiger Woods and Hideki Matsuyama. They were five shots behind Mickelson. Johnson tied for ninth in last year’s Open.

Although he made a terrific par-saving putt on the 18th hole Sunday, Johnson had little fortune on the greens during the last two rounds. He made just one birdie in his last 41 holes after canning eight birdies and an eagle in his first 31.

Johnson held the first round lead with a 5-under-par 66, then finished with rounds of  75, 73, 72. Until his bogey on the 14th hole Sunday, he had gone 21 straight holes without a bogey and was able to stay in touch with the leaders.

It was the second straight week of solid play for Johnson. Defending at the John Deere Classic last week, he lost in a five-hole playoff eventually captured by 19-year-old Jordan Spieth.

Johnson is assured of improving his standing in Presidents Cup points and World Golf Rankings. He was in 12th place among Americans for the Presidents Cup entering the Open. Twelve players make the team for the Oct. 3-6 competition at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Johnson was on the winning American teams in 2007 and ’09.

Ranked 29th in the world entering the Open, Johnson earned $247,809 for his efforts at Muirfield. He notched his fifth Top 10 finish in a major, highlighted by the 2007 Masters title.

Johnson’s next competitive event will be the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational Aug. 1-4 in Ohio, followed by the PGA Championship in Rochester, N.Y.

However, Johnson will be back in Cedar Rapids to host the third annual Zach Johnson Foundation Classic July 29 at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. He will be joined by fellow pros Steve Stricker, Kyle Stanley and Mark Wilson. Celebrities slated to appear include Kurt Warner, Chuck Long, Shawn Johnson, Nate Kaeding and Sage Rosenfels.
