J-Hawks edge Prairie for 5th place

FORT DODGE - Jefferson and Prairie went all the way to Fort Dodge to decide softball supremacy on the west side of Cedar Rapids and fifth place in the Class 5A state tournament.

The J-Hawks prevailed, 4-1, behind the two-hit pitching of sophomore Alyssa Olson and some clutch hitting by sophomore Maddie Hansen and freshman Erin Kuba.

Jefferson (33-12) won two games in Wednesday's consolation rounds. Prairie (29-16) split its two games.

The J-Hawks and Prairie Hawks split their doubleheader on June 4, the only time they met during the season.

This was the rubber match.

Hansen's bases-loaded two-out, two-run single in the third inning gave Jefferson a 2-0 lead.

Prairie cut the margin in half on Olivia Usher's two-out RBI single in the fourth inning.

The J-Hawks added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning when Kuba lined a two-run single.

Olson (21-4) walked three and struck out eight.

Senior Katie Kuch (22-9) took the loss for Prairie. She gave up six hits, walked three and struck out two.

Both teams had to work extra innings to reach the fifth-place game.

Dani Stromert's RBI bunt single scored pinch runner Savannah Fowler from second base in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Jefferson past West Des Moines Valley, 2-1.

Kuba hit a solo home run for the J-Hawks in the second inning that looked like it was going to stand up as the game winner.

But Kat Strauss led off the top of the seventh with a home run for Valley that tied the game, 1-1.

Prairie, meanwhile, scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to trip fellow Mississippi Valley Conference member Dubuque Senior, 5-4.

Prairie tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh on an error by the Senior center fielder. Aly O'Brian had doubled leading off the inning and courtesy runner Taylor Moenk tallied the run.

Senior scored in the top of the 10th to take a 3-2 lead, but Prairie answered in the bottom of the inning. Halle Lueck's sacrifice fly ied the game, 3-3.

Jessie Westhoff's RBI double put Senior back ahead, 4-3, in the top of the 11th.

Natalie Rumer's RBI double in the bottom of the 11th tied the game and O'Brian drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in the winning run.

Kuch pitched all 11 innings, allowing eight hits while walking five and striking out six.
