Walker cracks the 100-RBI mark in win

GENEVA, Ill. - Adam Brett Walker hit a three-run home run to push his season RBI total past the 100-barrier and powered the Cedar Rapids Kernels past the Kane County Cougars, 8-4, Sunday afternoon.

The Midwest League baseball game was played before a crowd of 5,574 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. It was the Kernels' fifth straight win.

Walker belted his 26th home run in the fifth inning with two aboard giving him 102 RBIs for the season. That total ranks third in the modern day (since 1949) history of the Cedar Rapids baseball club. He is 10 behind Larry Barnes, who played for the Kernels in 1996. John Tanner is the modern day record holder with 121 set in 1949.

Walker's RBI total is the highest in minor league baseball. He also leads the Midwest League in home runs.

Travis Harrison's two-run single highlighted the Kernels' three-run first inning.

Walker's blast in the fifth inning gave the Kernels a 6-1 lead.

Tyler Grimes' single and an error by Kane County second baseman Giuseppe Papaccio scored Harrison, who had doubled, to push the Kernels' lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning.

Niko Goodrum scored the final run on a passed ball in the ninth inning.

Christian Powell (3-5) scattered seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter Hudson Boyd and picked up the win for the Kernels. Alex Muren pitched the final two innings and notched his second save.

The Kernels go for the series sweep against the Cougars on Monday night at 6:30. They return home Wednesday for a 6:35 p.m. game against the Beloit Snappers.
