Cougars' 2-run rally ends Kernels streak

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from behind and edge the Kernels, 4-3, Monday night in a Midwest League baseball game at Fifth Third Bank Field.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Kernels, who finished 5-1 on the road trip.

The Kernels led 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning when Jeimer Candelario started the rally with a double to left field.  Rock Shoulders brought home Candelario with an RBI single into right field, tying the game 3-3. Shoulders advanced to second base on the throw home and was lifted for pinch-runner Jose Dore.

After back to back walks, with one intentional, the bases were loaded for Reggie Golden, who lifted a game-winning, sacrifice fly to center field that scored Dore and gave the Cougars the victory.

Madison Boer (1-1) was charged with the loss and a blown save.  He pitched 0.2 inning and allowed two runs on two hits.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Adam Brett Walker’s sacrifice fly plated Jonathan Murphy. It was Walker's minor-league leading 103rd RBI of the season.

Kane County scored two runs in the fourth inning. Candelario and Carlos Escobar drove in runs for a 2-1 lead.

The Kernels scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Max Kepler’s RBI single past a drawn-in infield plated Joel Licon to tie the game. The Kernels took the lead when Jorge Polanco scored on a wild pitch.

Josue Montanez started for the Kernels and was strong in seven innings of work.  He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking none.  Dallas Gallant went one scoreless inning in relief, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking one.

Andrew McKirahan (2-0) picked up the win for the Cougars. He pitched two scoreless innings in relief.  Michael Heesch started for Kane County, going five innings.  He allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.  Al Yevoli allowed two runs on four hits over two innings.

The Midwest League takes the day off Tuesday. The Kernels open a three-game home series against Beloit on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at Perfect Game Field.
