Murdock wins Metro Spotlight award

Kennedy junior Cole Murdock is the winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Murdock posted a three-shot victory in the Open Division of the 2013 Rotary Pribyl Junior Golf Tournament Aug. 9 when he shot an even-par 70 at Elmcrest Country Club. He finished the 72-hole tournament at 7-over 293 with solid rounds at Ellis Park, the Cedar Rapids Country Club, Hunters Ridge and Elmcrest.

Murdock also won the Novice title at the Pribyl tournament in 2011.

Murdock helped Kennedy finish second at the state tournament last year when the Cougars finished one shot behind Waukee. Kennedy has one of the best teams in the state again this season.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Murdock:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

COLE: My favorite individual moment would be winning the Pribyl two out of three years.

MSR: What is your favorite team moment in sports?

COLE: My favorite team moment in my sports career has to be when we won the state championship and the USSSA World Series in 2008 in baseball. For golf, it has to be being a part of last year's Kennedy golf team. We competed all year long when everyone thought it would be a "rebuilding" year for Kennedy High School and came together in support of our teammate Drew Wall, and the way we came together at state and just about came away with a state championship!

MSR: Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career?

COLE: My dad has had the biggest impact on my sports career, whether in basketball or in golf or even in baseball when I was younger. He has always been there pushing me to be better! But as far as helping me with my golf game, Larry Gladson from Elmcrest and Dustin Miller from Ellis have been a big help to me becoming a better player!

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

COLE: My future goals in sports are to play golf at a high level in college and continue to become a better player and see where it takes me after that!

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

COLE: Not sure this is really a community service project, but it would be when the golf team (not just varsity, but everyone) came together last year trying to get what was going on with Drew Wall's situation out to everyone to support for Drew and his family. I think that gave Drew even more reason to continue battling against what he was going against (Drew died from cancer last November).
