Marion steamrolls Anamosa, 58-0

ANAMOSA -- One week after being sidelined and schooled by the defending Iowa Class 3A state champions, Marion returned to its typical dominating form Friday night.

The schedule mandated that the no-luck Anamosa Raiders would be the Indians' rebound game, and the Marion offense was an unstoppable scoring machine in this gigantic District 6 mismatch. Marion's starters were gone by the midway point of the second quarter, but the Indians never stopped yard-marching at will in a 58-0 walk in the park at Downing Field.

The dropped passes, third down breakdowns and bend-and-break defense that defined Marion's hard 34-7 road loss to reigning 3A king Decorah in last week's early-season measuring stick game were nowhere to be found Friday as Marion got its groove back by exploiting its vast strengths over the undersized, outmanned Raiders.

"We came back from Decorah and knew we had to fix some things," Indians Coach Tony Perkins said. "It doesn't matter who you play, you've got to execute on your side of the football."

There wasn't a phase of the game Marion (3-0, 1-0 District 6) wasn't hitting on all cylinders Friday. Burning non-effective double teams, wide receiver Quinn Cannoy caught three first-quarter touchdown passes from quarterback Trevor Hardman, and the Indians were off and storming their way to one of the most-lopsided wins in school history.

"Anamosa plays their hearts out, but we know they've struggled the past couple years," Cannoy said. "We tried to use our size and speed advantage."

Marion journeyed to the end zone on each of its seven first-half possessions and accumulated 260 yards on 35 offensive plays while taking a 48-0 lead into the locker room. With four minutes left in the first half, Marion's second team was at the reins, Perkins had tabled his explosive spread passing game, and fourth string tailback Dontavious Young was driving the ground game.

"It doesn't matter who you play, you've got to execute on your side of the football," Perkins said. "When you have 36 men all contribute, you know you've got a pretty good football team."

Cannoy said Marion needed a four-star effort like Friday to remember what its capable of when it plays to its vast potential.

"We needed to get our confidence back," the wide receiver said. "We made too many mistakes against Decorah. It was important for us to play well against Anamosa."

Cannoy (whose scores covered 11, 35 and 44 yards) was a man among boys while simply shrugging off tight double teams to catch a pair of jump ball touchdown passes from Hardman. After Marion opened with a 21-point first quarter, the pace didn't slow when a vast array of Indian tailbacks took over in the second quarter. Jeremy Schnieders (16 yards), Preston Murphy (3 yards), John Carstensen (2 yards) and backup quarterback Carter Stigge (9 yards) added ground scores for Marion.

But it was Young who shined the brightest in Marion's run brigade. The junior blitzed Anamosa for 117 yards on 10 carries, including a 44-yard breakaway and a 7-yard second-quarter score.

"For a fourth string back getting some of his first playing time, Dontavious had a phenomenal game," Perkins said.

The box score told just how commanding Marion was in this running clock wallop.  Anamosa mustered just 70 yards on 34 tries against the Indians' titanium defense and didn't record a first down until Ben Kroemer's 25-yard run with 4 minutes to play. Anamosa (0-3, 0-1) crossed midfield just once in its 19th consecutive defeat.

Meanwhile, Marion looked like its usual self in a game, Cannoy said, was all "about fun."
