Kernels' Gallant suspended by MLB

Dallas Gallant, who pitched for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the 2013 Midwest League baseball season, was suspended Friday by Major League Baseball.

Gallant received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Gallant's suspension will be effective at the start of the 2014 season.

Gallant, 24, was Minnesota's 23rd-round pick in the 2010 Draft out of Sam Houston State University. He went 3-1 with a 5.47 ERA and 36 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings over 22 reliever appearances between Cedar Rapids and Rookie-level Elizabethton. He split the 2012 season between the E-Twins and Class A Beloit after debuting in the Appalachian League in 2010.

Gallant is the 53rd player to be suspended by Major League Baseball for a violation of the Minor League drug program in 2013.
