Football prevues - Oct. 4

The sixth week of the prep football season features a pair of intra-city battles as Xavier hosts Washington and Kennedy squares off with Jefferson at Kingston Stadium.

Xavier has allowed only seven points all season. The Saints have shut out their last four opponents and the only score recorded against them came late in the fourth quarter of a 35-7 rout of Dubuque Hempstead in the season opener.

Washington worked a miracle in its last game, scoring two touchdowns in the final 61 seconds to beat Waterloo West, 28-27.

A victory against Xavier probably would qualify as another miracle and put the Warriors in line for sainthood.

In the Saints' 'hood? Not likely.

Jefferson notched its first win last week at Waterloo East and now will try to win consecutive games for the first time in five years. The J-Hawks have struggled against the run, though, and that's what Kennedy does best.

Elsewhere, Linn-Mar hosts Wahlert, Prairie travels to Cedar Falls, Marion entertains Benton, and Cedar Valley Christian travels to Wyoming to take on Midland.

It's homecoming at Linn-Mar and Marion and fans will want to bring an umbrella and a smile. The forecast is for happiness ... and maybe some rain. But mostly happiness ... and maybe some lightning.

If Waterloo West had not beaten Cedar Falls two weeks ago and awakened the slumbering Tigers, Prairie would be our pick at the UNI-Dome. As it is, the Hawks still have a chance.

Cedar Valley Christian has lost all 17 of its games by an aggregate score of 1,232 to 204. That's an average score of 72 to 12.

That likely won't change against Midland, but the Huskies and their faithful followers will be happy, happy, happy for the opportunity to compete.

Maybe they know something the rest of us don't.

Cedar Falls also appeared beatable in two other games, pulling out a 14-13 win over City High and scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to beat Washington, 21-14. RB Eli Berregaard has rushed for 732 yards and 10 TDs. He had 245 against Linn-Mar. RB Dennison Harrington has 348 yards and 4 TDs.
