Central City mauls Huskies, 68-14

Cedar Valley Christian hosted Central City at LaSalle Field Friday night and the Wildcats picked up their first victory of the season, 68-14, in an 8-player, district 4 football game.

David Mosher threw six touchdown passes to lead the Central City offense and Seth Schlotterbeck hauled in three of the six.

Down 14-0 in the first quarter Kenan Ulmer finished off an 11-play, 55-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tom Scroggs to put the Huskies (0-6, 0-5) on the board and with the missed extra point attempt the score was 14-6.

A 55-yard scoring strike from Ulmer to Caleb Severson on the first play from scrimmage following a Central City kickoff gave Cedar Valley its second score in the half. The pair connected for the two-point conversion with 1:55 remaining in the first half.

Central City led 48-14 at halftime.

Ulmer completed seven passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He also accounted for 66 yards rushing on 17 carries.

“Kenan is an athlete,” Cedar Valley Coach Ed Betsworth said.  “He is a real competitor and we rely on him for his intensity and when he is able to get the ball to Caleb (Severson) you see Caleb’s excellent speed.”

“We have been practicing that spread offense and it gives us the opportunity to go wide and take advantage of our speed,” said Ulmer. “It gives us more options.”

Severson’s 55-yard scamper left the defender in the dust on the long touchdown pass.

“I don’t really think about speed, I just try to do whatever we need to be successful on offense or on defense,” explained Severson.  “We are intentional about encouraging each other and pick each other up. That’s what teams do.”

“We still have a long way to go,” said Coach Betsworth.  "We played a better first quarter but we have a lot more to learn.”

The Huskies have two games remaining, at Elkader Central and at Easton Valley.

Central City won for only the third time in the last three seasons. All three victories have come against Cedar Valley Christian, by a combined score of 195-36.
