Late flurry lifts RoughRiders

Sooner or later, the RoughRiders -- the top scoring team in the USHL -- are going to light the lamp.

On Friday, it took three goals in the third period to come from behind and beat Youngstown 4-3 at the Stable in Cedar Rapids.

"Our guys know we didn't play a full game. You've got to play 60 minutes every night in this league," Cedar Rapids Coach Mark Carlson said. "But I give our guys credit for finding a way."

The RoughRiders (5-1) trailed 3-1 going into the final 20 minutes. Youngstown (4-6) had gotten a pair of goals from Luke Stork, including one on a power play in the second period.

Cedar Rapids struggled for much of the first two periods. The RoughRiders were 0-for-6 in power plays and were outshot in the first two periods 28 to 14 by the Phantoms.

Andrew Poturalski had the only goal for Cedar Rapids, getting a nifty score in front of the net with assists from Jason Kalinowski and Jack Rowe.

"We didn't come out and play hard, and we knew that," Poturalski said of the first two periods. "But we knew we were still in the game, and still had a chance to win."

The RoughRiders were coming off a strong road weekend in which they scored 14 goals in two games.

"Last weekend we scored a lot, but its a new weekend, so you never know," Judd Peterson said. "We were certainly more confident coming into this game, especially when we were down."

Peterson said the team huddle between periods and talked about what they had to do. For Carlson, it was simple -- get back to the game plan.

"They dug in in the third," Carlson said. "I just think we followed the game plan in the third. We were a little off the first 40."

Poturalski got things started with a goal in the crease with 15:50 left in the game. Then, just 32 seconds later, Dylan Steman worked on the crease on the opposite side, to tie the game at 3-3.

"If you're not going to go to the paint, you can't score," Carlson said.

"Coach said just play hard," Poturalski said. "Maintain the puck in their zone and pressure their 'D.' We had a lot of offensive opportunities."

The crowd went wild a few minutes later, when Mark Auk sent a laser-beam pass through the defense to the stick of Judd Peterson, who flipped in the  game-winner with 9:34 left.

Auk and Peterson are roommates off the ice.

"An unbelievable pass," Peterson said. "I didn't know I had a clear lane to the net. Assistant coach Phil Osaer told me before the game to go glove side on him, and it paid off."

"That was a nice feed," Carlson said. "Petey does what he does on that. He ripped it."

The final minutes of the game the RoughRiders circled the wagons to run out the clock and improve their winning steak to four straight.

Danny Tirone got the win in goal, coming up with 32 saves as the Phantoms provided offensive pressure all night.

Kyle Connor and Luke Stork each had tough open ice shots to put Youngstown up 2-1 after one period. Stork put Youngstown up 3-1 with a power play goal with 4:06 left in the second period.

"The guys dug in in the third," Carlson said. "We'll see if we can learn from this. Its a process."

The RoughRiders now set out for a four-game road trip, starting Sunday in Chicago (0-9). That's followed by a trip to Indiana (2-4), and a pair of games in Muskegon (5-4).

The next home game is Friday, Nov. 8 against Des Moines (3-4).

Cedar Rapids is 3-0 on the road so far this season.

"We dont' care where we have to play," Carlson said. "If you want to play in the parking lot, we'll play in a parking lot.

"We'll see if we can keep it up."
